My Dream Nokia #8: Nokia N9 MeeGo Phone Slider Concept with edge to edge display

December 17, 2010 10 comments

My Dream Nokia Number 8 comes by way of Jim who found these concept MeeGo Phone Photos on the MeeGo forum. They’re designed by a guy called “SuperHero” who is an old user of Linux, the Nokia n900 and a programmer.

It is titled Nokia N9. There are no details other than what can be observed from design.

I think they look pretty slick. There are 9 images in total, one in particular showing the slide out QWERTY which is somewhat curved in action like early Xperias from Sony Ericsson though looking much nicer.

The screen seems huge, with near edge to edge, borderless display.

My Dream Nokia #3: Nokia N9-01 MeeGo Phone concept 12MP, CBD 4.1″ 1280x720x32, 64gb, Dual Core 1GHz

November 12, 2010 22 comments

My Dream Nokia #3 – response to the “My Dream Nokia” idea from Alberto:

Thomas Boutroue sends in his Dream Nokia – the Nokia N9-01

“My dream’s nokia may be the N9-01 : a N900 in better (better hardware, alu casing, bigger screen, and MeeGo”

His dream specs are on the side but just to reiterate:

  • MeeGo 1.2
  • Dual Core 1GHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • 64GB Internal
  • Micro-SD Reader
  • Physical Keyboard
  • Spaced Keys
  • Sensitive Pad
  • No keys on the front
  • Hard keys for +/0 and camera
  • Face Cam 5MP
  • Rear Cam 12MP
  • Camera Lens Cover (Very, very important feature now realising what I’ve missed. So easy to wash out photos, especially with bright flash when there’s a smudge on the camera glass)
  • 4 LED Flash (ooh quadflash again? No one seems to be a fan of the Xenon. Then again, I do miss that spontaneous LED torch. But Not so much as blurry people pics :p)
  • Aluminium casing (Early N9 leak has that single aluminium macbook pro look)
  • CBD 4.1″ 1280X720X32 (Where’s the 32? I’ve always envisioned that the surrounding side border around the phone could form some touch input – no actual buttons needed. Or that around the screen are a few SEPARATE pixels that would truly make it borderless but still be functional in certain situations where you might need that border.)
  • LED Notification on the front (OH Real N9, you must have this like the N900. It’s unbelievably useful)
  • Resistive but multitouch (uh oh – controversial. Die Hard N900 fans would agree. Well this is Thomas’ own Dream Nokia)
  • Very Strong Front Surface
  • Dolby Surround. Jack 3.5 Audio Out
  • Wireless HDMI
  • Micro USB + HOST + OTG
  • 4000 mAh battery (AMEN! But I doubt we’ll ever get more than 1500mAh for any Nokia Phone given current size constraints from Nok)
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • WiFi N
  • LTE Support
  • 6.5×12.0x1.0cm

The good thing is, a lot of these specs (bar a few such as battery capacity) are actually physically possible right now.

Very early Nokia MeeGo UI worth posting. Even if it doesn’t improve from this I’d be impressed.

About “My Dream Nokia”

I’m sure you’ve dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia phone. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don’t you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don’t need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title “My Dream Nokia” and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Nokia E5x MeeGo Touch and Type Concept

November 11, 2010 12 comments

We received an interesting email to tips@mynokiablog.com from Alberto Pietrobon (BSc Student in Sweden) about his dream Nokia.

As you can see, without the navigation and soft keys, it’s a huge screened Nokia E5 running NOT Symbian but MeeGo. I really like it and it actually makes the E5 look quite good looking (sorry E5 fans, not personally likin that random silver band in the middle)

What’s even better is Alberto’s idea for you guys to send in your own “Dream Nokia Phones”.

Concept Nokias: The Nokia Kinetic

July 19, 2010 7 comments

Now before you say anything about the uneven base, you’ve got to know there’s some function behind it. (Thanks for the heads up Keith!)

As described in the blurb,

“The Nokia Kinetic is a magical mobile phone that makes receiving a call, text, or email more playful by converting digital information into kinetic movement”

Basically, for incoming notification, the phone will spontaneously stand up.

It’s a 2009 design so still features the classic mini usb port. So glad pretty much everything’s gone micro. Remember the fuss when moving away from Mini USB and how all our cables were mini? Anyway, off topic.

It is a very playful design, it reminds me of that egg toy that lies down and bobs back up. The blurb continues to say this is intended for business users – which based on their general conservative tones will probably not appreciate that J-LO inspired bottom.

The front face however, and if the phone was univorm slim all over, would look quite beautiful, no? It’s kinda N81ish, now iPhone 4ish. I love how the bottom swoops around to the back instead of having a full sandwich effect.

Something a little like below (although could be more tastefully done with more time and skills :p)

Concept Nokias: Nokia X9 – 720p HD recording, Quad LED and AMOLED gesture area

March 16, 2010 4 comments

Via pestaola.gr and designer @kalevgr, we have a Nokia X9 – a concept phone based on the X6 but with several new welcome features:

  • 720p HD recording
  • Quad-LED
  • HDMI out
  • Capacitive Multitouch screen
  • This is most interesting: AMOLED screen buttons underneath
  • DUAL MINI (not micro) USB – so the X9 can function as a USB hub

Call/End buttons - Quickly make a call. Always something present in Nokia phones and I've missed this in the N900

Note how they’re not just buttons, they tell you how many new messages/tweets and facebook messages.

The menu button is also interesting. It’s contextual. One tap to homescreen, swipe down to unlock, swipe up to control social networks without opening main screen. Maemo /MeeGo device definitely needs this.

I like the idea of a secondary “gesture area” like the Pre. But instead of being LED lights, we could have a full blown screen. I wanted something like this since the N95 – I always hoped the always present music buttons could alternatively morph into gaming buttons/camera buttons when appropriate (they kinda do with the N85 by changing backlighting).

Concept Nokias: Nokia Stealth and Nokia N82 Dragonfly

March 8, 2010 7 comments

Just when all the phones are become minimalistic rectangular slates of touch screens, here are a couple of concept alphanumeric keyed candybars to give us a blast of some unconventional monoblock designs.

The first is the Nokia stealth, named after the pictured stealth bomber, Lockheed’s angular F-117 Nighthawk. The stealth theme reminds me somewhat of the Prism….actually no,…the rugged 5140

I would totally love a high end device called Stealth – sleek black  smartphone/MeeGo pocket slate with a hidden “stealth” touch screen.

The second is a slightly more convenstional looking (at least from the top half) Nokia N82 dragonfly. The N82, apart from being the undisputed king of Nokia’s photography line (and possibly the mobile phone world) is also known for it’s slightly small and awkward keyboard. The look achieved here resembles something quite insect like, as expected being called the dragonfly (though there is a hint of Orange SPV)

The Bug Like quality also reminds me of another super durable Nokia – the 5100.

Nokia Orion – Touch Screen Gaming Nokia Concept

February 3, 2010 7 comments

It resembles a super slim Game Boy Advance, with a touch of E97 ‘clone‘; this concept called Orion by the Recombu guys is a dedicated Nokia gaming touch screen phone which relies on dedicated gaming keys as opposed to purely touch screen.

The E97 part is the qwerty keyboard which appears behind the touch screen, but it has its own screen for texting too.

I’m all for super slim touch screens! More concept Nokia phones to drool over please! (If only I had the skillz – I’m only a MS paint guy >_<) Also, what I really like is that it’s a name. Not a designation/barcode/mysterious digits.

If N900 had a 4-row keyboard and/or a tilted screen?

January 25, 2010 7 comments

I saw some incoming referral links from Maemo.org about an old post I did where an unknown Nokia device had a rare four row keyboard, the top being dedicated for numbers.

I revealed the first image to be simply a cheap-ass MS paint job as a concept of a proper 4-row QWERTY keyboard on a Nokia handset.

The design of the phone was not what I wanted to showcase, instead I intended the focus to be about a keyboard that could work well within a small footprint.

Looking back at that post, I just wondered how it might look in the N900. Forgive the crudeness. Quick cut and paste from MS paint: Click to see the rest of the images and article
