My Dream Nokia #8: Nokia N9 MeeGo Phone Slider Concept with edge to edge display

December 17, 2010 10 comments

My Dream Nokia Number 8 comes by way of Jim who found these concept MeeGo Phone Photos on the MeeGo forum. They’re designed by a guy called “SuperHero” who is an old user of Linux, the Nokia n900 and a programmer.

It is titled Nokia N9. There are no details other than what can be observed from design.

I think they look pretty slick. There are 9 images in total, one in particular showing the slide out QWERTY which is somewhat curved in action like early Xperias from Sony Ericsson though looking much nicer.

The screen seems huge, with near edge to edge, borderless display.

Tweets Sent from Nokia N9 and Nokia N9 Widget?

December 10, 2010 29 comments

This is from @davidgilson's Gravity app taking a screenshot of @SimonLR's tweets.

I don’t know what this is about but Adnan sent in a screenshot from @SimonLR who’s twitter says he’s tweeting from Nokia N9 and Nokia N9 Widget.

  • -WOW
  • -I’m just going to leave this tweet here and see what happens
  • -There’s home screen widgets
  • – This keyboard is spacious
  • -Ovi Store doesn’t work

Simon’s friend, @MikeMacias: says:

I don’t know if @SimonLR got his hands on N9 today but don’t think he’d kid. Simon resigned from @mobile_fanatics and TMF doesn’t have it

Those tweets aren’t up any more. But plenty of people have seen it. Twitter fault/masking?

update: The original batch of tweets still there, sent 13h ago (hence why not in recent block of tweets).

Additional details:

  • Nokia fans, save your money for the next few months
  • Android and iOS don’t have shit on this. Not even close

Nokia N9 rumoured specs: 4.2″ AMOLED, 1600mAh, 190 Million Polygon/s power, 768MB RAM, 1GB ROM, 12MP

December 4, 2010 80 comments

Based on alex68's comments N9 does not look like this anymore.

Some more MeeGo specification rumours are surfacing and this is somewhat hard to believe.

A conversation between @camb078 and @addiermedina reveals some exciting number crunching figures especially after an initial typo indicated 19M polygons/s, later corrected to an incredible 190 polygons/second. (The PS2 at 66M/S, PS3 at 275M/S, Wii ~ 100M/S, 360 at 300M/S, N8 at 35M/s). No details on the actual CPU/GPU.

Other supposed specs include

  • 4.2″ AMOLED display (no info on resolution.)
  • a new battery sporting apparently 1600mAh (B4-LD). Really? Could be a typo.  If so, BL-4D is 1200mAh?
  • 1GB ROM
  • 768MB RAM
  • 12 megapixel carl zeiss camera

Cheers Adnan for the heads up to!

Video: ST Ericsson U8500 1.2GHz Dual Core ARM Cortex A9 with MeeGo Phone OS

November 13, 2010 14 comments

A couple of days ago reader, Marcin, mentioned the ST Ericsson U8500 for MeeGo

“ST-Ericsson U8500 Linaro and MeeGo 11.30 -12.10, November 16th, 2010 MeeGo Convergence Dublin:D”

Above is a video by Charbax showing a reference design for U8500 with MeeGo on it (cheers to @Cambo078 for the find), which would apparently be suitable for tablets as well as phone. Products with U8500 expected first half of next year (Max Before July 2011). Would the Nokia N9 be one of them?

Another video below shares  more info about the U8500 – this was shot back in February also by Charbax where the reference design devices had only Android and Symbian. U8500 is apparently up to 1.2GHz (Dual Core) with ARM  Mali 400 GPU.

Check out the 720p 3D game rendering. Also look at that 1080p playback on Symbian.

It’s worth noting that Nokia MeeGo phones may also use Intel chips in future – but at the moment, ARM is the better choice for the first Nokia MeeGo phone (If I recall correctly).

What does the U8500 feature?

The U8500 is the first mobile platform with full High-Definition 1080 progressive-scan camcorder capabilities. With its combination of a dual-core SMP processor and a high-end 3D graphics accelerator, the U8500 enables a full web-browsing experience for next-generation smartphones.

  • Full HD 1080p camcorder, multiple codecs supported
    (H264 HP, VC-1, MPEG-4)
  • High-resolution, touchscreen display support up to XGA (1024*768)
  • Simultaneous dual display support
  • High performance 3D graphics, support for
OpenVG 1.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0
  • Dual camera support with Integrated ISP 18 Mpixel and 5 Mpixel
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS enabled platform
  • Built-in USB 2.0, HDMI out
  • Support for multiple operating systems, Symbian, Android
    and Linux-based platforms
  • Optional support for mobile TV standards

  • Highly efficient, low-power ARM dual Cortex™- A9 processor
  • Dual multimedia DSP for low-power, flexible media processing
  • High-bandwidth LP-DDR2 interface
  • ARM  Mali™ 400 GPU and NEON®CPU extensions
  • State-of-the-art HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) Release 7 modem
  • Unique audio architecture with a wide range of audio codecs supported
  • Advanced power saving architecture enabling class-leading audio and video playback times

More ARM stuff

Whilst we’re on the topic of ARM Cortex A9 let’s check out how:

NVidia Tegra2 ARM Cortex A9 shows that a dual core performs up to 50% faster in rendering pages compared with ARM Cortex A9 with one of the cores disabled.

Here’s the Mali 400 GPU in action (but on the Samsung Orion ARM Cortex A9)

Finally from Nufront, their ARM Cortex A9 can run at 2GHz for Laptop and Desktop usage. There’s a fan going on with this one to cool down the chip. They say in the production you won’t need that (I think that’s what they said). This one powers Ubuntu 10.10 and Quake 3.

@EldarMurtazin: “Nokia N9 Hardware is near perfect, I like it.”

October 4, 2010 76 comments

This N9?

A while back, Eldar didn’t seem too positive about the N9 and was actually supposed to leak his review early August. Whatever happened since then, he’s kept silent (no N8esque reveal) and was found today to say

“Nokia N9 Hardware is near perfect, I like it.”

NEAR PERFECT? And it’s Eldar saying this? About a Nokia? :p

I have no idea what perfect hardware is by Eldar’s books, but he is a man of high expectations. Similarly, (for me) I’d be wanting that N8 camera. Then it would be perfect. But is that why it’s “NEAR” perfect because he doesn’t have it?

But hold your horses – on MeeGo…

“In terms of SW is not so good at the moment – but hope they will change it in 2011”

Eldar has also mentioned previously that Nokia’s own version of MeeGo looks better than Vanilla MeeGo we see floating about. To be fair, as an incomplete piece and judging as final, MeeGo does look like there’s MUUUUCH room for improvement. I also hope MeeGo handset UI gets its act together, especially now with Mr Skillsman and Mr Elop watching over.

oh and in reply to @chilko for pointing out that comment:

OMG, i’m so bias how you could mention such words from me 🙂

Gallery: Live pics of the Nokia N9 MeeGo Phone

August 19, 2010 53 comments

I was just checking my email and confirming attendance to Nokia World (yay! thanks Mark!) when I came across this (via JFH, thanks bud!). Remember that old video with the supposed Nokia N9 sporting a Nokia N7 (RM-626) style slider? Here it seems to be. The first MeeGo phone from Nokia which will officially début most likely at NW10.

<< leaked video many months ago that was dismissed as a shoddy fake.

Eldar found it supposedly through this site.

It looks incredibly thin, no? I want one. In black ^_^

OK must go now 😦

Nokia N9 Leaked Photos! Or is it actually the Nokia E7? QWERTY Slider, N8 design, Ridiculous screen clarity, 8MP.

June 26, 2010 16 comments

For many moons now we have seen the leaked image above. Some called it the N9, others called it the N8, supposedly sporting 4″ screen with 8MP camera and 720p video recording amongst a host of other features.

For one thing it runs Symbian. NOT MeeGo. So how can it be Nseries if N8 is the last Symbian Nseries? N9 is the highest N and was said to be on MeeGo.

Well, it could be the E7. (Or an off chance a N8 variant like SE’s “Pro” qwerty versions) N8-01, N8-02 like the Cseries and Xseries with their offshoot)

[Update. Apparently with the new naming convention, the single digit does not mean only one physical device, e.g. N8, but a tier of devices. There will be at least 3 N8 variants. 16GB, 32GB and QWERTY variant with lesser camera. N8-01, N8-02 or whatever. I hope that is not their final designation is it sort of wrecks the simplicity of single digit N. That would have been ok if it were once a year.

I think it’s a good thing to have only talked about the 16GB version at the 370EUR price point before even confirming 32GB version]

We know Eldar Murtazin in on holidays with one of these. In his N8 review, he said he didn’t have a Nokia N8 with him, but an analogue with QWERTY slider. Another thing he said is that he won’t be the first to leak images. Now NegriElectronics has let the cat out of the proverbial bag, ah well, the gates of prepublish proto hell are opened!

To those wanting a Symbian^3 (or possibly a Symbian^4) handset with N97 like tilt QWERTY, this is for you! Check out that 4 row keyboard. Again it seems there is NO dedicated numbers button, however, the spacebar is in the middle!

Something worth noting is the apparent, “Ridiculous screen clarity”, well actually they said REDiculous, so unless that’s a pun on the red theme, this maybe the first Symbian Touch to have more than 640×360 pixels. Possibly at least WVGA or possibly somewhat higher, oh say to the realms of the “ridiculous” Retina Display?. They may be talking about clarity of the display tech. But they must have seen AMOLED before and it certainly won’t be having Samsung’s Super AMOLED.

Similar dark grey colouring to dark grey N8. More anodized aluminium? My fav colour. Man, if this had the 28mm wide angle and xenon flash I might have gone for this one.

I’m totally digging this unified design. This shape screams Nokia and the upcoming explosion (not death) of Symbian as it gradually takes over low tier handsets.

More details should appear soon. Who’s publish their “insights” first, NegriElectronics or dearest Eldar?

Nokia N9 leaked? Has Impossibly thin tilt QWERTY slider and N8ish design!

June 14, 2010 7 comments

Engadget has come across what they believe to be a leaked Nokia N9 from a video (I can’t see it as it’s blocked in “my region”, can you?). Hopefully someone can rip that onto youtube.See video below (thanks James Burland and Joao Luis)

  • It has a QWERTY keyboard!
  • It tilt’s like the N97!
  • The keyboard has 4 rows!
  • It’s impossibly thin!
  • It has NOKIA N8 like sweeping curves
  • How does the mechanism work? To have that much floor space it must be like Touch Pro 2 rather than N97 flick tilt as it’s at least 85% where as Nokia’s often around 50%.

Now, I didn’t ask Alberto Torres about the upcoming form factor of MeeGo phone (most likely to be N9 since that’s the only Nseries number left and he said MeeGo phone would be on Nseries) but he did say it would be slimmer than N900 and more beautiful.

Engadget compared this “leak” to the N98/ aka Nokia E7 also rumoured to launch at Nokia World (though this is sporting a similar design, it’s running Symbian)

Then again this could just be a fake.
