Qt Contest: Port a desktop App to MeeGo/Symbian handheld for Ovi Store and win EUR 10,000!

December 23, 2010 5 comments

Word from Jim is that a couple of days ago a competition launched for Qt Developers.

Take your application from the desktop and port it to handheld devices, be it for MeeGo or Symbian via Qt, ready for Ovi Store consumption!

There’s either a new phone “or even 10,000 euros” as a prize.

The competition runs until the 28th February 2011. However, an early bird competition finishes on the 31st December 2010. 5 winners will be selected, each winning a Nokia N900!

The main competition prize is EUR 10,000 (10 thousand, I know how sometimes . is used instead of , and 10 euros might not seem such a cool amount :p) and will be awarded to the app which has been found by judges to be the best ported application. Then there’s supposedly 5 more Nokia N900s to give out.

And you get something too just for taking part! You’ll be awarded a gift bag, with a T-shirt and “other merchandise.”

Video: #NokiaSweded – @WOMWorldNokia’s video challenge entry. (Nokia super amateur “spoof”)

May 23, 2010 2 comments

A couple of weeks back WOMWorld sent over a bumper box full of accessories and odd items like wigs, plastic flowers and fake snow.

With that, I was supposed to make a video.

I didn’t really understand it at the time, and even if I had understood the brief, I was buried under a mountain of revision and exams. :S

Due to the ashcloud and such, the deadline was moved to 24th May, giving me some time to have a go at WOM’s video challenge.

My friends told me sweded is meant to look super amateurish so that’s what we’re presenting here on our take on sweding Nokia’s Simple Human Solutions ad.

It’s 2min 45 seconds long, and after that are behind the scenes/deleted parts.

[Someone was almost hospitalized due to one scene :o]

Original video

Yes, it barely looks anything like the original, haha, but we didn’t want to just replicate it. We wanted a sweded ultra low budget touch :p. e.g. drawing on the computer screen instead of an animated computer screen. The recording venue, hahaha.

How do you use Ovi Maps? Tell Nokia and Win a great Nokia GPS phone!

March 22, 2010 1 comment

Not sure exactly what the prize is, it seems to be the N97 mini given that’s what’s in the video (and it is a great Nokia GPS phone!) though it could be something else.

Anyway, if you fancy winning yourself a free GPS enabled phone all you have to do is share how you use Ovi Maps. Either:

  • Record a video (YouTube it/QIK it etc)
  • Take Pictures
  • Or write a blog post

More details over at

Via zomgitscj, it seems prizes include:

  • Nokia N97 mini (Winner announced 6th April)
  • Nokia X6 (Winner announced 13th April)
  • Nokia E72 (Winner announced 20h April)

What’s your Ovi Maps Story?

Competition: Win a 1 year’s free turn by turn licence to Ovi Maps!

September 28, 2009 2 comments

I found this via @MickyFin (originally from @chansearrington)

How to get 1 year’s free turn by turn licence on Ovi Maps.

5 Steps to get your 1 year’s Ovi Maps turn by turn licence

  1. Open up Ovi Maps 3.0 on your Nokia phone.
  2. Find a landmark – either do this via search or if you know a landmark, just scroll to it.
  3. Go to 3D View. Go to Options>Tools>Map 3D
  4. Frame the 3D landmark and take a screenshot. To frame, just scroll around and zoom in/out. To take a screenshot, go to Options>Tools>Take a screenshot
  5. Send via email to with the title of your subject being the name of your landmark. If you’ve got email set up on your Nokia device, e.g. Nokia Messaging, it is extremely easy to send via email. Find your screenshot, e.g. go to Photos>Downloads, select the screenshot and send via Nokia Messaging to with the title of the subject being the name of the landmark

HURRY, HURRY, HURRY! The first 100 unique landmarks gets a free 1 year’s turn-by-turn licence to Ovi Maps. There’s a few licences left!

You’ll get an auto reply email confirming your entry and if you’re lucky, you’ll get another email back soon saying you’ve won!

Here’s my entrant: Millennium Stadium. 2 minutes later, I got my licence code, and now I’ve got nearly the full potential of Ovi Maps in use (I say nearly, as I’m sure there’s a lot more to get out of it).

Tap an area and either select drive to/walk to and it’ll give you driving/walking directions from your current position. It’s blissfully easy.

Millennium Stadium

BTW, does anyone know how t o make Ovi Maps 3.0 into Imperial, i.e. give distance in Miles? I’ve changed settings to imperial but it still shows details in metric.

Update: This competition is already finished.

100 3D Landmarks, 6 copies each = collage time!

The World according to Ovi Maps 3.0

32785550The full size pic (5000×2914 @ 3.29MB) is a must to check out.

Can you see your entry? What landmark did you submit?Quick glance I can see mine at Alaska and Southern China ^_^.
