Near-final N8 firmware run through

With rumors circling the internet that the final, release version of the N8 firmware is scheduled to be finished by next week (crosses fingers) The latest video that I found on the site, http://tv.mediaprovider.se should hopefully give a pretty clear insight into the sort of performance and applications (read: games) we can expect to see when the N8 is FINALLY released. From the little available here, there should be few doubts in anyone’s mind as to whether this device will be sluggish, unperforming and underwhelming at release.

Give it a look and tell me what you think!

Youtube link to the 1st video! Thanks NeNoRmAl!

Update: Another video was taken on the 25th of August, just 2 days ago. The video demonstrates a few of the normal features available with the OS.

Give it a look.

That was really smooth. However, I’ve seen some other recent videos and I saw the N8 randomly rebooting for no reason at all! I hope that doesnt happen with the retail version. We dont want another N97!

wow, i never hear before about good working n97! you’re first!

I had n97 mini and it was total crap. I sold it after one month. TINY memory, self reset. Try install 20 apps ant run “Application Menager” – you will se error “out of memory”. Install 50 apps – aplication menager not even start

i had a 97 mini too and i sold out flash in 2 days due to antenna issue(as iphone4), self reset, and terrible battery life…
now with N97 classic belive me NO ONE of these problems! off course this phone become secondary when i’ll buy a new S3 phone

I don’t get it. Why would you buy the N97 classic after trying out the N97 mini? If I were you, I’d rather wait for N8/N9 or buy the Samsung Omnia HD/N900

because i very like 97’s qwerty, i had last year a i8910 but sams fw are crappy..n900 just abandoned soon by nokia must wait for N9 (but too much month to wait yet, that’s not good for me)

            fw on i8910 is crappy??!!
Haven’t you seen the HX8 fw? Its like the CRAZIEST fw update for i8910 till now! REALLY fast, very responsive, and makes it REALLY great. plus, the 600MHz processor and 256 MB RAM is much better.
You should try it with the HX8 fw, I’ve tried it and I REALLY wanted to buy it but I’m waiting for N8.

Get real. My 5800XM has had 12 firmware updates…the last 9 having been quite stable. I have gotten the application manager to get unstable AFTER installing over 130 applications. Try doing this on your phone…Mr. Android troll. Oh…you can’t even install that many applications, can you? I just installed a custom firmware from PNHT, the first time I ever hacked the 5800XM. Just wanted to get the C6/N97/N97mini homescreen widgets. Bottom line…works great. Stable, fast, and enough spare ram to run/multi-task the widgets, free voice navigation, and podcasting. In the end, Nokia has done a fair job of ensuring the Symbian^1 OS delivers excellent value. Oh, did I mention the phone’s been doing 2-way video calling over Skype since 3Q2009? Now, can’t wait for the N8…and flood of apps given the finalization of the Qt ecosystem. This device is impressive…and it can even make phone calls!

It looked much better in this preview. The only negative is the frame rate on the video and photo editor needs to be corrected.

Question: Does anyone know what the browser update/refresh is going to be? Is it going to be webkit based still or is Nokia going with Fennec across all segments?

    • andre
      August 27, 2010 at 8:48 pm

i’m with duncan on this…the frame rate for the menus in the photo editor applications could do with a bit of work

      August 27, 2010 at 9:30 pm

I’m not sure about the initial browser but I can tell you that a more powerful browser will come in the beginning of Q4. Th reason I’m saying that is because than the qt 4.7 will be released and one of the major improvements is webkit rendering(between 2 and 4 times faster) : http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2010/08/24/improving-the-rendering-performance-with-more-simd/

    August 27, 2010 at 8:38 pm

Its actually gonna be based on web-kit. Will be made using Qt I guess so that it’s compatible with S^3/S^4 and MeeGo. So I’m expecting it to be really good. Hope Nokia doesn’t let us down this time now!

I hope they add a feature to import bookmarks from other browsers. It would be nice to import my opera bookmarks that I synchronize from my desktop to my phone using opera sync. I don’t know if ovi or pc suite still syncs with firefox since 3.0, so it would be nice to have a wireless sync option.

Yea like others have said the video editor could do with some more work , but the fact that its free when other companies are charging for the same thing , does help . and i am sure the N8 will be a well updated phone when it comes out.

How do you know this is latest firmware? I’m not saying it’s not, I’m just wondering how we can be sure? It could easily be older firmware, no?

Other than that, it does look great on all fronts.

      August 27, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Rather recent vid. The date was about 2 weeks ago and from the performance would indicate it’s QUITE close to completion. A little birdy also hinted that the second-to last build should be out this weekend so it’s not far off given that builds are released weekly.

    August 28, 2010 at 2:38 am

i think this is rather impressive considering most phones in the past need a couple firmware updates to get all the kinks out

this looks like we wont really have any kinks @ launch!

    • Roger Johnson
      August 28, 2010 at 8:48 am

That’s the idea. I can definitely forgive Nokia if there are still kinks – I think it’s inevitable due to the nature of software development (having developed myself most of the last 27 years 🙂 ). Remember – no other smartphones in recent times have been trouble free at launch – iPhone 4 with hardware as well as software problems (2 updates from Apple), continual problems with Android and updates from Google and so on.

Nokia have delayed N8 from 2nd quarter to 3rd quarter to avoid this as much as possible (I will be very surprised if they are not almost 100% successful as their reputation is riding on this), and despite the numerous idiots who keep saying “release it NOW!”, Nokia are absolutely right not to release until they want to.

      • Andre
        August 28, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Looks like we MIGHT have a rather kink-free launch 🙂

Why cant nokia provide us with an attractive default theme out of the box? Why they like to use plain black color for their background,

take iphone as an example, it is best theme out ofthe box although you cant change the them unless you jailbreak it

do nokia always expect their customers to change to their favourite theme after purchase

    • Keith
      August 28, 2010 at 9:18 am

Seriously dude?! iPhone didn’t even have a wallpaper until now! Plus, it doesn’t have “themes”, it’s just the wallpaper that you’re talking about. And really, who cares? Most people change the wallpaper anyway!
Plus, the wallpaper in the n8’s default themes are sort of live wallpapers. They react to Rotation sensor. And Nokia provides really good wallpapers with their phones.

      • mja
        August 28, 2010 at 9:47 am

It’s possible to enable theme effects for at least the default themes/backgrounds after which the background looks “swirling” (it’s quite neat).

Finding this setting is the difficulty as it’s hidden under some 5 levels of hierarchy in a painfully hildon-legacy way.

          August 28, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Sigh i was hoping nokia would have changed this as Im sure most people didn’t even know about it in the past I had thought that would have changed this time around i guess not 😉

      August 28, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Part of the appeal for symbian devices (at lest for me) is to customize my themes either by downloading or creating my own; i’m pretty sure that’s a rather popular feature that the competition doesn’t even allow

ok so this is looking good, can’t wait for final release, have been very patient as my upgrade was due 2 months ago!Had a SE X10 but was not overly impressed, screen was lovely though and liked the browser, otherwise don’t know what all the fuss is about regarding android, maybe i’m a blinkered nokia fiend!Anyway sent it back after a week.As far as N8 goes I reckon that this will be the best convergence device bar none on release, this will be the swiss army knife of mobile devices!other phones may do certain things better(screen quality, browser, app store)but for an all in one mobile tech monster this should be it!Kinda has to be it or many nokia fans will reconsider if this turns out to be N97 mark 2(admittedly I have never used this phone, never even had a touch screen device!).I have had a N96 for last 18 months and N95 before that, loved them both despite flaws(mostly ram)N95 is the original all in one bad boy!
Last thing, bit dissapointed with nokia for length of time to release N8,when all is said and done there is nothing on the phone that isn’t already out on other devices, there is no groundbreaking new technology, surely multi touch gestures and coverflow dont take 8 months to get right!!

    • Andre
      August 28, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Social networking integration, Writeable data paging (aka virtual RAM), the OS being about 60% usable with multiple CPU cores, A new graphics architecture with significant use of GPU acceleration while at the same maintaining compatibility with old AVKON based apps and newer Qt-based apps are the reasons it’s taken 8 months.

S^3 was ONLY finished in June.

        August 28, 2010 at 9:41 pm

I hear what you are saying(sort of,not very tech orientated at the sharp end) but I still think 8 months or so is a long time to update an OS.I’d expect something built up from scratch in those timeframes.I aint hatin tho,I will be purchasing this phone when it comes out and expect to be very pleased with it!

Really really wish it would have had videolight tho, alas!

Actually I compared navteq maps with ovi maps and I found that navteq maps are more complete than what ovi offer. Why they can’t update ovi maps much faster since navteq already has new maps.

    @Josh

Several UK companies are now taking pre-orders on-line, including Play.com, Expansys, Handtec, and Clove Technologies, to name but three… and of course MobileFun, whom you mentioned.

I am still hoping that Nokia will (eventually!) offer it for a slightly lower figure on the UK website, as the ‘best offer’ I have seen up to now is £410.

I have kinda grown to like it from recently using a hand-me-down iPhone. I like that it lists the phone numbers instead of having to call your voicemail. It would be nice if Symbian will have it, or something similar. Not that it would be a deal breaker…
