Damien Dinning Dispels the myth and misconceptions behind Full Focus cameras #C7 #E7

[See C7 gallery]

Nokia’s Damien Dinning, Imaging wizard, has written a comprehensive post about Nokia’s Full Focus camera to educate and dispel about the myths and misconceptions about cameras without autofocus (as seen in slim E7 and C7  – C6-01 too though slimness debatable).

Full focus – low tech – v – simple? “it could be easily argued that Full Focus cameras are in fact more complex than autofocus cameras”

Benefits of Full Focus Camera?

  1. With a Nokia Full Focus camera you can simply grab moments without the fear of images or videos ever being out of focus for subjects from around 50cm through to infinity, regardless of lighting conditions or subject position in the frame etc.
  2. No shooting lag waiting for autofocus. Despite the Nokia N8 featuring the fastest autofocus of any mobile at just 350ms (average), it’s still a delay.
  3. Everything from approximately 50cm to infinity in the same picture/video appears in focus. Hence the name ‘Full Focus’ cameras. Conventional cameras have Read more…

Video: Phone Arena’s Nokia C6-01 720p Video Sample and Video review

November 23, 2010 1 comment

PhoneArena‘s got their hands on the C6-01 and have got some video samples and a video review.  The C6-01 is the cheapest of the Symbian^3 offerings but it doesn’t skimp out too much and is very good value for money.

  • Build quality wise PhoneArena were more impressed with the C7.
  • They seem to have a hang up over the screen size and the general thickness of the C6-01, and say the CBD whilst looking good with deep black and good colours, the technology is wasted on the C6-01.
  • BTW the considered slim X6 was 13.8mm, the C6-01 is 13.9. The Nokia 5800 is 15.5mm. The C6-01’s shorter stature makes it look more plump.
  • Camera on C6-01 they say appears to be the same seen on C7. Above average noise handling, good detail at 8MP and LED lights up well without bleaching.

Software wise, it’s Symbian^3 which will be pretty much the same experience on N8 and C7 (except for that issue with the smaller display). S^3 is praised for the combined GPU that allows smooth 720p video playback

Nokia N8 and Nokia E7 versus Samsung Galaxy S. E7 CBD AMOLED vs G-S Super Amoled.

September 25, 2010 43 comments

The case of the Nokia N8 teaches us to be weary of extremely early, leaked ranting “reviews” of prototype, unannounced phones. Remember the lack of info o the powerful broadcom GPU? Which we now know is class leading? The putting down of the supposedly standard, nothing special camera? Which we know now to be the best ever on a mobile phone? And what about the screen?

“Nokia N8 with other smartphones that are being prepared for release, and I must say, this is ridiculous. For example, I see that the N8 is very cheap OLED display. In fact, Nokia calls it the AMOLED display, but if you compare the display with the Samsung HD i890 (1,5 years already on the market), Nexus One of Google and other phones, it is not so good. The display is not as great as Super AMOLED in Samsung…”

Samsung’s rare Super AMOLED is touted as the best in terms of screen technology. At least in certain circles. Bright, vibrant colour reproduction with superior sunlight visibility (a feature taken for granted in touch displays, particularly AMOLED and certain LCD). We have shown you that the E7’s performs great outside (regarless of unusual test parameters, I COULD SEE THE SCREEN IN SUNLIGHT)

Looking at a Super AMOLED display (Galaxy S) versus the Nokia E7, you can see a clear difference between Nokia’s own. More vibrant or over saturation? Whilst the E7 and C6-01 seem to produce colours more closer to each other, the N8 and C7 seem to still have an image that pops out slightly more than the Galaxy S. This may be due to white balance issues – who knows. Having seen the screens on these phones, one thing is true – they are FAR from the cheap OLED displays Eldar had described.

Renowned non-nokia enthusiats over at engadget have mentioned that the E7’s display is brighter and more vibrant than their beloved magical Retina Display with the E7’s clear black looking “SIMPLY Gorgeous, black levels are no joke. Samsung’s stranglehold on badass mobile displays was pretty short lived”.

Whether the N8 also has CBD is uncertain but some current N8 owners have described N8’s outdoor visibility to be better than Super AMOLED. Screen technology aside, you know it’s not just some cheap OLED display.

The only issue these screens lag behind in one aspect could be screen resolution. 640×360 vs 800×480 (e.g. N900, Galaxy S). On the upside, lower screen resolution benefits improved battery life. For sure, N9 will have 800×480 with CBD AMOLED, and awesome keyboard and 4″ screen at least all worked out.

Thanks to jenjaman, N#O#R#U#L#E#S, Eugen and others  for the heads up on this piece.

Video: Nokia C6 video review

Next up is a 2 part US video review by Smartphoneenvy of the Nokia C6, the ‘budget’ version of the Nokia N97 mini.

As noted in the video unboxing:

Carphone Warehouse UK still lists the Nokia C6 as coming soon

Nokia Shop has the C6 available for £289. But it’s worth noting buying from Nokia direct is more expensive. E.G. In the UK, the £79.99 Nokia C3 is listed as £119.00, so expect the C6 price to be much cheaper that what Nokia has listed.

Here’s GSMARENA’s video unboxing of the Nokia C6, a budget version of the N97 mini (complete with N97 style homescreen) with 4 row, non-tilt slide QWERTY keyboard.

There’s no speaking during the video but you do get an interesting background song made up of phone vibrations.

Despite being S60 5th (S^1) and having ARM 11 434MHz processor, it looks pretty nippy. Look at how fast in switches from landscape to portrait and vice versa. Other operations are hindered more by the S^1 annoyances like inconsistent 1 vs 2 button presses. Photo browsing of larger files now seem to stutter as expectations are raised to buttery smooth zoom panning.

New Nokia C6-01, C6 with 8MP camera and Dual LED flash

July 16, 2010 13 comments

I read about this last night but was much too sleepy to blogpost. This apparently below is the 8MP, dual LED flash version of the Nokia C6 – THE C6-01.

branded C6-01 on the Nokia Site

Why has it been made? I don’t know. Screenshot from the Nokia shop below, click here to check it out yourself

The difference is that the back has now become a little uglier (personal opinion) with the C6-01 (left) looking a little fatter. I’m not sure the actual dimensions. Now, how the heck is this meant to be a reduction of the portfolio if Nokia will just keep making variants of the same phone months of each model’s existence?

Well this quick upgrade will give the C6 a little bit more longevity. Will it be sold in the same markets as the original (E.G. X5)? Will this replace the original? I don’t know  there hasn’t been an official launch of this handset, the image might possibly be a mix up with an early proto.

If they were to co-exist, would it not be confusing if the only moniker change is the addition of 01.

Video: 5 minute hands on with the Nokia C6

May 6, 2010 1 comment

Here’s a 5 minute look at the Nokia C6 – the newest touch-QWERTY from Nokia, pretty much a budget N97 mini but with a real nice 4 row keyboard and looking somewhat snappier.

Unless you speak Russian, you won’t understand what’s being said but it is still worth a look to see the C6 in action.

Video: Nokia C3, C5, C6 and E5 all together. [C6 looking speedy]

April 18, 2010 1 comment

Hot on the heels on shoguz78 ‘s video collection showing the C3, C5, C6 and E5 individually, here they all are in one video so you get get a better appreciation of the size comparison.

It’s a short video but one thing to pay attention to is how quickly the Nokia C6 rotates from landscape to portrait.

The N97 (flagship) has a slight delay but looking at the white C6, it turns almost instantaneously. Note they do have the same 434MHz processor.

I also cannot get over how sleek and stunning the super cheap C3 is. And it’s made even more beautiful by the ghastly train wreck that is the E5. Hideous. Absolutely hideous.

Here’s what came out of the Nokia Virtual event…

The Nokia C3, C6 and E5! You have probably seen them all in one incardnation or another through rumours, screenshots, FCC sketches. Well here they are.

New additions to the QWERTY messaging family

E5 is the new single digit Eseries. Seen around and rumoured as the Nokia mystiq.

This one we’ve already seen before, the touch QWERTY hybrid E6.

220 EUR

This was seen just before April fools day. It’s my favourite out of all of them for the simple fact that it could be really appealing to the younger audience. It’s like a teenager friendly blackberry. And what a star for 90 Euros! Oh and it plays back video with quite a wide range of codecs so less conversion needed: H263, H264, AVI, mpeg-4, and .wmv! (Info from Q&A)

Oh, and it comes in SIX colours!
