Toshl Expenses Tracker made entirely in Qt – Now available for Symbian^3 on Ovi Store (#N8 #C7) Manage your finances with ease!

December 12, 2010 16 comments

Here’s a neat little app we first encountered with the Nokia N900 and Maemo 5.

  • It’s a very, very easy to use expenses tracker to help manage your finances. At this time of the year, with the plastic and cash flying at Christmas, this app is a must have download to keep an eye on your money!
  • It’s available now (Symbian^3) for FREE on the Ovi Store.
  • It’s entirely made in Qt which the makers have said Nokia people were extremely helpful with. Overall, thumbs up for Qt especially over previous alternatives. More on this at the end of post.
  • I’ve tried it on the N8 and it’s a great app (more on this below).

This doesn’t just sit on your phone. You can sync your data from your other phones with the PRO account service which not only means you can monitor your data from any phone or PC but you’ll also get analysis graphs of your expenditure to give a visualisation and new perspective of your spending.

Thanks to Matic Bitenc we have a discount code for the first 20 people that gives you 50% off the one year service.

GSM Arena’s Screen Showndown: Nokia’s CBD AMOLED – best contrast, best colours, better sunlight readability than Super AMOLED!

November 29, 2010 16 comments

The meticulous folks at GSM Arena (Thanks Aymen Kanzali for the heads up to tips@mynokiablog.com) have compared the display technologies used in HTC Desire HD, LG Optimus E900, Sony Ericsson X10, Nokia N8, iPhone 4, Nokia C6-01, Samsung Wave and Galaxy S.

Basically, LCD vs AMOLED vs IPS LCD vs Super Clear LCD, vs CBD AMOLED vs Super AMOLED.

Nokia C6-01 with Clear Black Display (CBD) AMOLED proves to be a mighty contender, having best contrast with the Wave, followed closely by the N8 leaving iPhone 4 behind.

For sunlight readability, CBD is in first place with iPhone 4, BEATING the SUPER AMOLED buddies Galaxy S and Wave to 2nd and 3rd place.

On best colours – Super AMOLED? No guess again it’s Nokia’s C6-01 CBD with best colour rendition, edging out the two SUPER AMOLEDS.

How To: Changing Fonts in Symbian^3 (very easy, done in a minute) Nokia N8, C6-01, C7

November 23, 2010 32 comments

UPDATE 2: Major apologies for those trying this and finding errors. As noted, try at own risk. This already mucks up Ovi Store and prevents it from starting. Also I’ve had problems with Nokia Panorama but that’s been buggy since this morning.

Back in June we asked should Nokia change their icons and fonts. From 496 votes as it stands, 71.98% agreed on both, with 8.47%% only wanting icon change, 7.86 just font change and 11.69% were happy with fonts and icons the way they are (not exactly encouraging).

Well icons change variably with themes and are mostly up to the theme designer (check out screenshots at end of post to see different icon styles). Fonts on the other hand is soo easy to change yourself thanks to this tip from gadgetbuff to mynokiablog.com/tips! That’s great because the Nokia font has been heavily criticized as one of the factors making Nokia phones look a little old. We were exstatic when we saw a different font in Symbian^4 leaked screenshots only to find out they were modified.

“A font says a lot, though quite subtly, and so often overlooked.

The narrow Nokia font made sense in older phones when trying to conserve on pixel usage. But now we’ve got high res screens and can afford wider fonts, narrow, sharp fonts look much less appealing than their plumper, rounder counterparts.

The curviness of “Century Gothic” [Very similar to “Prelude”, used in Palm Pre I think] is often found in children’s books because of the emphasis on classic alphabet shapes and thus readability. Prelude is probably the best font at the moment being used on phones. The letters are very curved, a little more readable than Century Gothic (E.G. letter r), but less wasteful on character spacing.”

So how can you change your font too?

Damien Dinning Dispels the myth and misconceptions behind Full Focus cameras #C7 #E7

November 23, 2010 6 comments

[See C7 gallery]

Nokia’s Damien Dinning, Imaging wizard, has written a comprehensive post about Nokia’s Full Focus camera to educate and dispel about the myths and misconceptions about cameras without autofocus (as seen in slim E7 and C7  – C6-01 too though slimness debatable).

Full focus – low tech – v – simple? “it could be easily argued that Full Focus cameras are in fact more complex than autofocus cameras”

Benefits of Full Focus Camera?

  1. With a Nokia Full Focus camera you can simply grab moments without the fear of images or videos ever being out of focus for subjects from around 50cm through to infinity, regardless of lighting conditions or subject position in the frame etc.
  2. No shooting lag waiting for autofocus. Despite the Nokia N8 featuring the fastest autofocus of any mobile at just 350ms (average), it’s still a delay.
  3. Everything from approximately 50cm to infinity in the same picture/video appears in focus. Hence the name ‘Full Focus’ cameras. Conventional cameras have Read more…

Video: Phone Arena’s Nokia C6-01 720p Video Sample and Video review

November 23, 2010 1 comment

PhoneArena‘s got their hands on the C6-01 and have got some video samples and a video review.  The C6-01 is the cheapest of the Symbian^3 offerings but it doesn’t skimp out too much and is very good value for money.

  • Build quality wise PhoneArena were more impressed with the C7.
  • They seem to have a hang up over the screen size and the general thickness of the C6-01, and say the CBD whilst looking good with deep black and good colours, the technology is wasted on the C6-01.
  • BTW the considered slim X6 was 13.8mm, the C6-01 is 13.9. The Nokia 5800 is 15.5mm. The C6-01’s shorter stature makes it look more plump.
  • Camera on C6-01 they say appears to be the same seen on C7. Above average noise handling, good detail at 8MP and LED lights up well without bleaching.

Software wise, it’s Symbian^3 which will be pretty much the same experience on N8 and C7 (except for that issue with the smaller display). S^3 is praised for the combined GPU that allows smooth 720p video playback

Video: Nokia C6-01 Unboxing and Hands on

November 20, 2010 6 comments

Here’s an unboxing and hands on video with the CBD Nokia C6-01. All the usual stuff with the box contents. Ear phones are just that – the standard Nokia ones (not the slightly nicer in-ear ones – though that’s a personal preference).

Seems that despite those remarkably long nails the C6 is still quite easy to use.

Video: Nokia C6-01 user interface demo and Review

November 18, 2010 Leave a comment

The cheaper cousin (very reasonably priced) of the Nokia N8 and C7, the rightful 5800 successor that is the C6-01 gets a software hands on demo from GSM Arena.

This shouldn’t come as anything new as what you see in the N8 you’ll see also with the C7 and similarly with the C6-01.

Pretty much same experience over different price points. No HDMI, smaller 3.2″ screen (though CBD!), and none of that glorious N8 camera capabilities. But other than that, everything inside is the same (CPU/GPU/RAM apparently – so no software issues from N8/C7/E7/C6-01). You also get (like the C7) Call and End buttons.

Whilst you’re there you might want to check out the GSM Arena Nokia C6-01 Review!

I’m off to bed, so I’ll read this some time tomorrow 😀

Nokia C6-01 First Clear Black Display phone starts shipping today! (Another addition to Symbian^3 line up)

November 4, 2010 75 comments

The cute little Nokia C6-01, undoubtedly will be another best seller for Nokia like the 5800 starts shipping today! It’s powered by Symbian^3 and under the hood shares the same processor and GPU as its bigger brothers N8 and C7. However, like the Biiiiiiig E7, it has a truly brilliant screen – clear black display – true blacks, high contrast, high saturation that’s comparable and some would say better than Super AMOLED. Even Engadget says it’s glorious.

From Nokia Conversations:

The new Nokia C6 is the smallest and most affordable of the new family of Symbian devices. The C6-01 measures 103.8 x 52.5 x 13.9mm and weighs in at just 131g. Like its siblings, it’s a fully functional communicator with support for 3G and WiFi on board. It’s got a 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touch-screen featuring the new ClearBlack display technology for the first time (more about that in a later post). The C6-01 is also one of Nokia’s greenest devices to date, featuring the use of bioplastics and recycled metals for much of its construction.

It doesn’t skimp on multimedia, either, with an eight-megapixel full focus camera with dual-LED flash. The camera’s also capable of shooting 720p high-definition video. The usable internal memory (340MB) is probably a tad tight for that, but can be souped-up with a microSD memory card for over 32GB of storage. There’s a 2GB card to get you started in the box. Like all the recent devices, it comes with free navigation through Ovi Maps, extra apps from Ovi Store and tunes from Ovi Music.

“The Nokia C6-01 is designed for the consumer who wants to stay on top of their social life while on the go,” said Jo Harlow, head of smartphones. “The new Symbian platform makes social networking fast and easy, while from the design point of view the Nokia C6-01 fits perfectly in your palm. Even the smallest of hands can reach every corner of the screen!”

Thanks to Keith for the heads up to mynokiablog.com/tips!

Gallery and Poll: Nokia E7 versus Samsung Galaxy S (versus Nokia N8). CBD AMOLED vs SUPER AMOLED (vs AMOLED)

September 28, 2010 40 comments

Thanks to NeNoRmAl for the heads up on this article from a fantastic Russian site bringing great coverage on these upcoming Nokia devices, mobiset.ru.

All of Nokia’s big screen AMOLEDs versus Sammy’s Galaxy S (above)

The poll is somewhat arbitrary and unfair given that the majority of votes will be based on secondary source images and not via direct testing. But hey, that’s the best we got for now 🙂 Also it’s just between E7 CBD and Samsung Super AMOLED as there’s no point adding Nokia N8 right?

I asked specifically which is brighter/more vibrant as opposed to an open ended “better” screen. I do like the higher res that gives the Galaxy S a touch more definition (you’d need to zoom in on a 17″ screen to notice though) but there’s something about those E7 colours that jut pop and leap out of the screen. Is that good or over saturation?

VIA mobiset.ru.

UPDATE: from the translation, they did not expect the significant margin of brightness by the E7. Resolution differences as noted is imperceptible in these photos. They also mention that the colours are unnatural and screen is too bright (superfluously bright says babelfish). However, they note that was their individual perception and that an in depth screen test will come soon.

Well there you go, E7’s screen is so bright, it’s too bright. Get your sunglasses out before you view. :p
