GSM Arena’s Screen Showndown: Nokia’s CBD AMOLED – best contrast, best colours, better sunlight readability than Super AMOLED!

November 29, 2010 16 comments

The meticulous folks at GSM Arena (Thanks Aymen Kanzali for the heads up to tips@mynokiablog.com) have compared the display technologies used in HTC Desire HD, LG Optimus E900, Sony Ericsson X10, Nokia N8, iPhone 4, Nokia C6-01, Samsung Wave and Galaxy S.

Basically, LCD vs AMOLED vs IPS LCD vs Super Clear LCD, vs CBD AMOLED vs Super AMOLED.

Nokia C6-01 with Clear Black Display (CBD) AMOLED proves to be a mighty contender, having best contrast with the Wave, followed closely by the N8 leaving iPhone 4 behind.

For sunlight readability, CBD is in first place with iPhone 4, BEATING the SUPER AMOLED buddies Galaxy S and Wave to 2nd and 3rd place.

On best colours – Super AMOLED? No guess again it’s Nokia’s C6-01 CBD with best colour rendition, edging out the two SUPER AMOLEDS.

Leaked: Nokia Nseries N00 Prototype C: 12MP, xenon and N95 form factor.

November 29, 2010 42 comments

Thanks Adnan who found this on eBay (via Symbian Tweet and Smartphone Arena)- here we can see what is supposedly a Nokia Prototype found on eBay. It sports a slide out keypad like the N95 family (N85, N86, N96) and bears a Carl Zeiss 12MP camera with Xenon Flash.

There’s also a kickstand like the N86. The eBay page names this as the N87 (rumoured a while ago as the 12mp xenon snapper – which we thought turned out to be the Nokia N8). N00 is quite normal for proto.

Is this an early prototype that’s been resigned to before even hitting the shelves or possibly something coming soon? It’s like finding a secret member of the family after all these years. The design on the face doesn’t look very contemporary. No one does sticky out buttons any more. Certainly not a splattering of them. A China clone perhaps? But no clone has ever replicated xenon. A remnant of a cancelled Nseries. Certainly would have been enticed by this more so than N96/N86.

Video: Nokia N8 – My Superfun house party. Weirdest Nokia video EVER! [update FX Studio app leak?]

November 29, 2010 8 comments

I saw this on NokiaFrance‘s channel. I don’t really know what it’s about. Some guy/girl capturing memories from a house party?

You should watch it, it’s so weird. There’s aliens, robots doing the robot, girls pouting with duck lips, paintings blowing party horns, spaceships, fire-breathing inflatable dragon, electrified inflatable balls, guy with see through torso, girl with mouse in boobs, girl with sparks coming out from her roller skates and phantom hand printer, girl with laser beam eyes, cartoon comic words appearing in air, and a creepy guy sucking/inhaling a girls face.. The most normal thing is probably the two girls above wrestling in what seems to be ketchup (not so weird, at Cardiff Uni we had a Custard Wrestling society).

Update: Sorry – video was removed and NokiaFrance youtube channel is DOWN. How very, very odd.

Update 2: Holy sh!t was this made with a Nokia N8 and FX Studio as noted in comments (and twitter) by thejan2009 ? See Vimeo videos at end of this post.

Update 3: This is up again under the banner “See more with HD”! I love it! Non HD – boring, nothing going on. HD, see all little details you would have other wise missed! hahaha.

Gallery: Own Voice Available for Nokia N8’s Ovi Maps voice nagivation on Ovi Store (and neat web version for own voice)

November 29, 2010 Leave a comment

@OviByNokia tweeted that Own Voice service is available for the Nokia N8. (Is it available for other S^3 handsets too?)

This allows you to record your own or friends/loved one’s voices for use in Sat Nav Ovi Maps navigation.

There’s an app version that you can download from Ovi Store or you can try the Web version which I had no idea about until today.

You can also download voices from other users who have submitted their own voice online (and you can do the same!).

Note – even though the recording is from a phone, Nokia’s expertise with audio recording means crystal clear playback. Can’t say the same if you use the web version and a pc microphone.

If you’ve got the older version, you might want to check out the new Own Voice as there are some great improvements.

“In the updated version of Own Voice for Ovi Maps– with even better voice handling, Web recording, co-creation on Facebook and advanced sharing features, it is even more fun to create your own drive guidance instructions and invite your friends and family to join in! NOTE: This app needs the latest version of Ovi Maps, activated in online mode.”

Video: Nokia E7 Multitasking and F-Secure (with remote wipe for stolen/lost devices)

November 29, 2010 6 comments

uptodateksa2 gives us another E7 hands on showing multitasking and F-Secure from Ovi Store.

As well as being an antivirus for your phone, it will also allow you to remotely wipe content from your phone if it’s lost or stolen.

Probably for some, the data is as precious as the phone itself (as if you haven’t backed up then the data is irreplaceable – worse if there’s sensitive data)

You can programme a back up number which will be sent a text message of the number if the lost/stolen phone has their SIM replaced. Reply with a code and it’ll wipe the device.

This comes with E7 by default.

Now I’d actually prefer to have it send me GPS location so I can go find the phone myself or inform the police of the asshole that’s nicked my phone (yeah still bitter about 7610 that got stolen from me :p not that 7610 had GPS..BUT if it did…)

You may have seen this but if you haven’t here’s a video of Nokia Ovi Suite 3.0 Beta.

It comes with two major improvements including new home view and new music player.

You can try it out over at Nokia Beta Labs (though all I’m getting is a URL error after clicking download).

You’ll need to sign in with your Nokia Account first though to try beta labs stuff.

Nokia C7-00 camera… not quite what you’d expect!

November 29, 2010 18 comments

Due to popular (kind of) demand, I’ve conducted a short yet conclusive test on the 8 Mpix camera capabilities of the Nokia C7-00. Similar fixed-focus or EDoF  (Extended Depth of Field ) camera modules are also used in a pair of other Symbian^3 based Nokia smartphones like the C6-01 and the upcoming E7, so I think it’s safe to draw some parallels out of the results of this test.

To see how it goes, I’ve pitted the C7-00 against a seemingly run of the mill, average performing by today’s standards, 5 Mpix auto-focus camera in the Nokia N900. I like having my camera tests as varied with different phone models as possible, so in some shots I’ve also allowed HTC Desire to bring an outlandish flavor into the test. So let’s get going!
