Intel rival AMD joins MeeGo Project!

Speaking of Open projects, AMD joins the Linux Foundation’s MeeGo Project. Why not, I mean we’ve got ARM chipsets too for MeeGo, despite Intel (MeeGo founders with Nokia) being AMD’s fiercest competitor. As said in the conference, innovation comes from collaboration NOT from one single man. Chris Schlaeger, Director of AMD Operating System is currently speaking at the MeeGo project.

“We will put resources, invest time and money where we think we can put meaningful contributions. If you think GPU/CPU can’t make a difference, beware. I really look forward to working with you guys”

Apparently he’s been following MeeGo project before MeeGo existed as he had the Nokia N810 and enjoyed tweaking it – and now is really happy to see how far it has come.

“Great example of Industry collaborations at work…we look forward to more industry arch rivals” [MeeGo Conference chair?]

“MeeGo represents an exciting, open-source mobile operating system we expect to be adopted by mobile and embedded device makers over time,” said Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice president, software development, AMD. “We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units.”

yea. I was listening to the live conference. It’s nice for AMD to join. this means that meego can become a powerful competitor to other platforms

WOW! This is just awesome but weird at the same time considering the fact that Intel and AMD will work together! But I guess this will just bring more innovation and open up greater opportunities to make MeeGo even better

Not so weird when you think about it. Both Intel and AMD are X86 architecture type manufacturers. They generally don’t make ARM type processors. Since there is no market or OS that uses the X86 type processors they have to make an OS themselves.
Intel already saw this and buitl Moblin and thus later MeeGo with Nokia.
AMD doesn’t want to be left behind especially since AMD has a vast knowledge on GPU’s (something Intel is lacking compared to AMD) so they can contribute to MeeGo in a big way and make profit off of it in the long run as well.

Then you still have AMD’s APU (Assisted Processor Unit, IIRC) supposedly that is a piece of kit that could be a gamechanger.

All in all, a great development, while it is also a potential hazard. But we’ll see, here’s hoping for the best.
