My Dream Nokia #2: Nokia N10 MeeGo Phone Concept

November 11, 2010 14 comments

OK I didn’t think we’d get a response to the “My Dream Nokia” idea from Alberto so quickly. This comes by way of Peter Lackman – the Nokia N10. When I say N10 I can’t help but think Ben 10 (ah I’m so childish).

No details on specifications from the email but as you can see we have this:

  • gloriously huge space eating screen – hardly any wasting of any phone face. This might well be the future where pretty much all front area is screen – the borderless goal huh?
  • N10 sports the Nokia N8’s 12MP camera – no xenon but quad-LED-flash as seen in the X7 concept. Certainly be a pro-night video shooter.
  • There’s HDMI,
  • 4-row Tilt hinge QWERTY
  • Near Field Communication (as secretly found in the C7)
  • What OS is this? I don’t recall such MeeGo/S^4 (looking this or from iOS or Android (though I don’t keep up with all Android variants). I love the phone book landscape. Blergh it is MeeGo. Cheers Andre
  • Oh and cheers for Jim for reminder of the leaked Nokia MeeGo Phone UI video:

About “My Dream Nokia”

I’m sure you’ve dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia phone. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don’t you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D.

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don’t need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title “My Dream Nokia” and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Nokia N8 torture test

November 11, 2010 18 comments

Before Nokia phones get released they go to some tough torture test to make the sure they will survive in real world situations and here is a video from Nokia’s official blog showing tests of N8’s being tested. enjoy 😀

In addition to the drop test, there’s more than 200 other endurance tests that we put new models through to see if they pass muster. Some of the highlights include:

  • Extreme weather: We use special machines to expose them to extreme temperatures from around -40°C to +85°C, helping them to withstand conditions from the cold of the arctic circle to the heat of the Sahara desert.
  • Humidity: We also test for use in tropical and humid parts of the world by placing devices in a special chamber for several weeks where they will experience humidity levels as high as 95%.
  • Clothing: When we carry devices in our back pockets they may bend when we sit down or rub on trouser fibres. We simulate these effects with special machines that bend and twist the device, and one that uses a real pair of jeans to test friction and wear and tear.
  • Pockets: Devices are often in bags or pockets with other items like keys or coins, so we place devices in a special “shaker” machine with hard particles to see how resistant they are.
  • Buttons: People press the main keys on their device an average of 200-300 times every day. To ensure the keypads can respond to this level of use, we press the keys up to one million times in the lab.

Nokia E5x MeeGo Touch and Type Concept

November 11, 2010 12 comments

We received an interesting email to tips@mynokiablog.com from Alberto Pietrobon (BSc Student in Sweden) about his dream Nokia.

As you can see, without the navigation and soft keys, it’s a huge screened Nokia E5 running NOT Symbian but MeeGo. I really like it and it actually makes the E5 look quite good looking (sorry E5 fans, not personally likin that random silver band in the middle)

What’s even better is Alberto’s idea for you guys to send in your own “Dream Nokia Phones”.

I’m sure you’ve dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia phone. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don’t you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D.

Video: Nokia N900 USB on The Go copying 1.46GB .avi Movie in 4 minutes(and playback)

November 11, 2010 9 comments

divan0 shares with us a pretty cool video of USB on the Go for the N900. We saw it the other day playing back a movie directly from a DVD drive over USB to Go. Here’s something a little more day-to-day/practical.

  • 2:04 N900 huge video file playback. Not a problem for the N900
  • 3:25 N900 Copying 1.46GB file from flash drive to N900
  • 07:50 N900 finishes copying – 4.25 minutes. That’s what my windows machine says it takes to copy a 700mb movie to my flash drive. (ha, 4 minutes not 3. My A-level math tutor shakes his head in shame)

Video: Nokia N8 Commercial by Kalvin, Lon, ChiGer – Control Traffic Lights?

November 11, 2010 2 comments

Here’s a fan (I think so anyway) answer to the “It’s not the technology, it’s what you do with it” Nokia N8 mantra.

Controlling traffic lights with the N8? How so? 😀
