Video: Vertical and Horizontal App Page Swiping for Symbian with Grid Touch – Free at the Ovi Store – demoed on Nokia N8

November 10, 2010 12 comments

Remember this idea post and video from last year?

9 homescreens on the N900 – all accessible in one swipe

The original concept was not just for homescreens but also for your apps.

Whilst nothing of the sort has appeared on Maemo, Thanks to Offscreen Technologies, lucky Symbian owners (do you think it’s confusing not to name particular variations of Symbian, i.e. ^1, ^3) can try out a new grid style menu with Grid Touch. At the moment it performs horizontal and vertical page scrolling, which by comments of the N900 post would be the best way to go about it as the 9 direction would certainly confuse.

Offscreen Technologies have gone all out with this, providing a new look status bar, search bar with new portrait keyboard, instant grid overview look

What’s totally most awesome is that Offscreen Technologies are giving this excellent app away for free at the Ovi Store! Vaihab from TheHandheldBlog has a great demo video to share.

Go download Grid Touch from the Ovi Store now!

Cheers to Jim for the heads up!

Video: Introducing the new Wellness Diary beta (Nokia Beta Labs) Demoed on the Nokia N8

November 10, 2010 6 comments

Lose weight, eat smart, exercise more or change our habits for better balance? Erm, yes please.

Wellness diary makes it easy to set goals, monitor progress and if you wish share achievements with others.

I had a seminar at Uni on Monday on the exact same thing (principles of being Med Students/Doctors). It was really useful to know about setting clear, specific goals with a set deadline instead of woolly, vague ones that have an endless due date that in combination makes it more prone to that task/goal being ignored.

A diary you might not always have with you but a phone most likely.

“Monitoring progress is easy with automatic functions and reminders, and you can see your progress instantly via graphs. In the near future you can also share it with your friends via social networks”.

Get professional coaching

If you’d like coaching or expert advice, or feedback on your progress, we are happy to tell you that you’ll be able to use Wellness Diary with a variety of professional third party services in the near future. These will be wellness services like general health coaching, smoking cessation, personal training, or nutritionist support. We are currently in discussions with several partners.

In this Beta phase we’re already offering one third party Wellness service, Duodecim Electronic Health Examination and Coaching. To start using it, just click on and fill in the your health status to get started. Duodecim’s service is also in a testing phase and is offered as a Beta service.

If your company is interested in mobilizing your existing wellness related on-line service, please contact us via e-mail at for more information.

To download, head on over to Nokia Beta Labs.

Videos: Nokia N8 Street Night Shots and remarkable digital zoom (plus night shot filmed and edited on the N8)

November 10, 2010 Leave a comment

A couple of Saturdays ago whilst waiting to pick up my mate from the train station, I took a couple of very low light street videos.

I remember being really surprised with the outcome as the video was remarkably bright. Not that you’d necessarily be in such situations – what’s nice is that you can rely on the N8 to capture great video in pretty much all conditions.  Also with my surround sound, playing back the audio feels like I’m there again staring at the traffic – the rumble of the buses – the chatter of the people – with that stereo separation it adds depth to the playback experience.

Finally a very understated feature is that near-optical zoom esque digital zoom which doesn’t loose detail. Using the full 12MP sensor, it just gradually “crops” a 1280×720 portion of the video. It’s like when you’re viewing a photo in the album. You’ve got a specific window of 640×360 (say 1280×720 when in video) but the full image that you can zoom into may be 4000×3000. You can keep zooming in and the image will not go blurry

Below are some screenshots from the youtube video (adds artefacts) which was then printscreened and mashed into jpg (more artefacts) but there’s no noticable degredation.

One thing to note though is that YouTube seems to purposely modify contrast and saturation.

Check out the initial wide shot and the closer zoomed in shots. If this was your standard digital zoom of yesteryear, we’d just have the static 1280×720 pixels and just blow up those limited pixels which would kill any quality you may have been hoping for.

Zoomed in. Light readjusts as more of it fills the screen.

Look at the zoomed in poster. I couldn’t see this with my bare eyes.

This just one of the many areas it helps to have that big sensor and those 12 Megapixels. And here’s Topolino70 again making what would be a mundane and boring street video into a pleasant and tranquil watching experience.

Video: Unboxing of the Nokia N8 Mobile Holder CR-122 – Stay safe and hands free

November 10, 2010 14 comments

Compliment your N8’s award winning Sat-Nav prowess and position your Ovi Maps machine perfectly in your car with the Nokia N8 Mobile Holder CR-122 (how teleshopping speak was that? :p)

But seriously this is a great accessory for drivers and sat-nav phone users in general. If you haven’t got a phone mount, this is really one to consider.

  • Detachable suction pad with adjustable ring to maintain that vacuum and keep it stuck to your windshield.
  • The grasp mechanism to hold your N8 is pretty cool too just widen to let your N8 in and just squeeze it closed again.
  • If I understand correctly (I don’t speak Russian, just guessing from the video), you get a sticky pad which has a surface that the mobile holder itself can stick to. This means you don’t necessarily need a perfectly flat attachment. Perhaps the dashboard itself, or even the back seat
  • Not just for Sat-Nav. In car enttertainment – sort of.
  • You can connect your N8 over bluetooth if your car system has it or just simply STREAM over the FM Transmitter.

Now this isn’t just useful for SatNav. Stick the N8 to the backseat for your kids and let the N8 playback a movie.  Though it might have helped if the arm was a little longer (not sure if that sticky pad itself can attach to material of the head-rest/back seat).

This retails for around 15GBP UK.

HD Video: Finnish Lakesides from Dawn to Dusk – Filmed and edited on the Nokia N8

November 10, 2010 3 comments

Above is another stunning Nokia N8 video from topolino70 who amongst many are truly showcasing how fantastic the N8’s HD recording is.

Once your shot is composed, keep it steady on a tripod. This makes your video look like a series of moving pictures because each and every frame is so clear. Go ahead, pause at any moment and the screenshot is crystal clear. As mentioned before, the close up shots are produced with a simple magnifying glass. A great advantage of the N8’s Active Hyper-Focal Focus is that past that close up distance, you are always in focus. No initial focus necessary (though there are certain times when you’d want only certain things to be in focus but that’s another story.

On Saturday we saw BGR’s leaked Rogers Roadmap indicate that the Nokia N8 will be coming to the Canadian carrier at an incredible price of 79.99CAD on plan/contract and 449.99CAD without.

Thanks to Kieth for the heads up – he saw that Rogers are sticking with the leaked detail.

Check it out here:…

If not, find it by clicking the Nokia option.

I can’t seem to click any further than the overview catalogue page (I end up with error – though it might be an issue my end. Experiencing many a memory leak with XP after taking laptop apart :S )
