Video: Holy Frikkin Awesome – Playing DVDs on the N900 with USB Host Mode!

Oh Maemo 5 and Nokia N900 – You never cease to surprise. RT’d by @johnnybrasco @MeeGoExperts has found a very awesome video by mohammad7410 of the brilliant Nokia N900 playing a DVD disc over USB Host mode.

Playing DVDs on the N900 with a modified kernel and a custom mplayer build.
Thanks to the hostmode team, including but not limited to:
Joerg Reisenweber
Paul Fertser
and the rest of the team mentioned on:
h-e-n project page: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/h-e-n/
(Note: video is playing solely on CPU power, mplayer is not accelerated by the PowerVR, which explains the framedrops)

OK so now imagine the whole mobile computer scene. Bluetooth/USB keyboard/mice – HDMI monitor connection and CD/DVD connectivity.

Wow, with N900 possibilities seems to be endless! Let’s hope that N9 will be as open.

it’s a shame that the N900 and Maemo itself wasn’t pushed harder i think if it were the worldwide “Android fame” would be Maemos instead

It wasn’t supposed to. N900 was NOT aimed at the mass consumers. You can think of N900 as more of an experiment/glimpse of Nokia’s future. And we all know the awesomeness of N900. even after a year of it’s release, it doesn’t fail to impress us.

N9 on the other hand will be more mature than the N900 and will have even more capabilities by the grace of MeeGo and “revolutionary” hardware. Combine both of those and you will have a TRUE mobile computer. N9 will reach parts where NO other smartphone has ever gone. It will completely change the way we think of a smartphone. And as Nokia says, its not gonna be a smartphone, it’ll be a mobile computer.
And since N9 will be running on MeeGo, Nokia’s final, true high-end platform, it will be advertised and promoted heavily unlike the N900 and N9 actually will be aimed at the mass consumers. So you can safely place a bet on that. If N900 alone has changed SO much, N9 will do things that we’ve only imagined of…..Or haven’t even imagined…..

Can you do the same with the Nokia N8 and its USB-on-the-go feature?????

It says you can plug in external HDs or USB sticks so I don’t see why not a DVD drive…
