Video: Nokia N8’s new browser and the new lag free, draggable homescreen!

UPDATE: Nokia has filed a copyright complaint on this video and it has been removed. With the channel potentially being deleted too. Nice.

This video comes from alex68 who sent it in to tips@mynokiablog.com. What we can see are two cool things

1) Homescreen swiping works with drag kinetics! It appears that the swiping delay is gone WITHOUT having to tamper with settings and remove theme effects like in this post.

The lag on the homescreen has been criticised heavily, but fortunately (or not) it was part of the UI design and NOT a limitation of the N8 hardware.  Now that perceived lag is gone and it is said to be smooth and responsive.

2) New browser has got rid of that stupid ugly fat bar at the bottom it seems! Hurray! I have wanted that ugly fat bar (my affectionate term for it) to die since S60 5th. At least now, slowly but surely it’s disappearing.

  • The address bar is now at the top.
  • It appears that works like the awesome bar/N900’s address bar where you can type in url or search terms.  Check out the “G – Search for”! Brilliant stuff.
  • More of the screen is visible!
  • You can see the freaking keyboard AND the screen behind whilst typing on a touch screen.
  • Browser loads instantly without going to the bookmarks page (I’m assuming it loads a selectable home page – unless the link was already a bookmark, but then the icon )
  • Easy copy/paste/cut on the address bar (not sure if this is possible with web text itself)

The demo of browser is just for showing the UI and functionalities that were missing from S60v5 browser. However it is a still very much evolving and developing product, any arguments about performance and interface might not be fair for the time being.

Great news for Nokia N8, C7, (and future C6-01, E7, Symbian^3) users!

Many thanks to alex68!

Whilst we’re on talk of the browser….(and with the note about this product still in evolving stage)

  • When clicking BACK or at least perhaps with a multitouch gesture (e.g. two finger swipe back) could the web page just go back? Often I just want to go back a page and not have to go through the carousel.
  • Tabbed browsing. Need it and must have easy UI switcher for it.
  • Generally be as good as MicroB as noted at Nokia World (that new browser would be as good as the mobile browsers of the competition – unless MicroB should not even be considered as a mobile browser as it’s so good).

What are you hoping for/looking forward to in the new browser?

[btw is this the new Qt one? It looks massively different from the latest build as seen on C7)

    Wow!!!!!

“This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Nokia Corporation.”

Alex68, I hope you don’t get in trouble for leaking that stuff. Thanks! =]

Unless they can track the IP address used to upload the video which is unlikely to say the least, it should be fine.

you would think Nokia would want this out there (or maybe that’s why they allowed it to be played so long before removing)

Instead of spending time scanning blogs for copyright claims they should push this out asap. 😦

Back function seems missing. I also want this feature badly.

I heard that you can turn off the carousel from settings and then back button acts as normal back button, can you test it Alex?

The software is under heavy daily development. The features are subject to change or improvement each day. I guess my firmware was a few days old and no surprise if it is supported in a newer build.

Now I can confirm the vertical swiping on an icon will open the app.

I will make the last demo soon mainly for the portrait qwerty keyboard that another big concern yet about N8 for people making a buy decision.

I know you guys as Nokia fans are very eager to know new things or improvements in the coming major updates. But I don’t want to spoil the excitement or joy when the new good things finally available for us

I can tell that we can really expect many improvements in many areas so far as I experienced and tested, and we can even expect more to come. But now I want to keep them secret.

Well that’s a bummer, had really wanted to see this video but didn’t have the time as I was on a business trip with limited wi-fi access!

Well, I guess Nokia taking it down says they are really trying here. I like that!

After coming from the N900 and Micro B, and to there from the N97 I can only pray the N8’s new browser is at the very least better. As it is it is awful, no better than the N97. It really drags the N8 down and is the only thing stopping me making the N8 my main device.

    Alex

About the N8 Romanian support, Nokia uses an internal number for it and they usually just flash the new image when changing the language.

For you case, you can change your product code. In below like, there are product code that you can use

    http://senseapplied.com/index.php/nokia-n8-regional-product-codes-europe/

After you have changed your product code, you can go to nokia page to update your firmware to get your language.

    http://www.djkaty.com/nokia-changeproductcode

You should be very careful with product code. The phone may get broken if product code is wrong. The best way is to get help for Nokia care center. They should do it for you if you request the service.

    Hope this helps.

still… can’t use nemesis it keeps bouncing me off with an error while scanning for product… argh do u know a solution? (restarted my computer, nokia suite is not running in background) i’ve tried it for like 20 times at least and it’s strange. on my last experience with an n95, nemesis worked instantly.

Hi Alex, will these updates will be passed down to other Symbian ^3 devices as well? Specifically the C6-01, I’ve kinda got my fingers crossed 😀

    • alex68
      November 8, 2010 at 12:43 pm

The new features and improvement are applicable to all Symbian 3 phones, if they are not phone specific features.

Are portrait and landscape qwerty keyboards aligned? Like:
    Q………P
    A…….L
    Z…..M
    unlike the keyboard installed already:
    Q……
    A……
    Z……

    unlike the keyboard installed already:
    Q……

seems to not showing(& nbsp), but anyway, what I meant was: “A” not being exactly under “Q” and “Z” not under “A” and so on
