Is the hdmi cover scrathable? It surface is shiny, so i am worried about it, nokia should make it rough texture

another complaint is that its covers are hard to fit well

Yes, the top and the bottom are made out of plastic so they are scratchable. 😦

  2. October 23, 2010 at 10:03 am

Wow, thanx for the great shots…
although some of the devices were smudged 🙂

    • October 23, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Yah apologies for the smudges. Was trying to be inconspicuous when taking photos in the shop 🙂 Didn’t help that I couldn’t turn off the camera sound of N82 (offline no sim)

Turn off the keypad beeps and there will be no more camera sound 😉

Noting that we shouldn’t try to compare anything other than physical size as those are dummy phones with fake screens 🙂

    • October 23, 2010 at 2:56 pm

You’re right – this is just for size comparison. Although not all are dummy phones. BB Pearl, Palm Pixi, iPhone and iPad are real. As are the others in weird clamps though screens are off. 🙂

The pic of the N8 n the iPad got me thinkin’.. Such great difference in size yet the tiny N8 has got more functionality than the bigger iPad..
So what IF Nokia makes a tablet out of Symbian(aka Symbian ^3)..? I mean its got the USB OTG function, HDMI TV out function, memory card support and with Qt probably a 1280 by 720p is do-able right? Why wait for Meego..? This tablet, they can have it here n NOW.. Sure Meego’s coming next year and with this launched early 2011, Nokia can take their time optimising Meego to a perfect T.. And of course Meego’s tablet is gonna be a high end device while Symbian’s tablet will be for everyone else.. Retain the hardware accelerator, upgrade the CPU and Ram of course.. 1ghz n 512mb will do just fine to be future proof..16gb mass memory is good as long as memory card support is on it. 7inch widescreen is adequate..Flash 10.1 is vital though.. And if they really make it happen, tweak the UI a little like putting SPB Mobile Shell out of the factory or something thats more palatable..

I don’t know.. I’m a symbian freak through n through.. So I dun mind a Symbian tablet and will definitely shell out my cash for it. But will it be marketable worldwide..? Maybe.. With wide developers’ support, I’m sure the customers will come..

    • October 24, 2010 at 5:03 am

I have been thinking the same since Samsung enlarges their handset into tab. Maybe Nokia is not up to it just now because of the old Symbian. I mean you know how some people and reviewers treated Symbian. So Nokia should try after letting everyone taste the new Symbian to earn confident of masses back with Nokia (and in Symbian’s ability and appearances) then go for that option. After all Nokia have Smartbooks, how hard it is to turn them into tablet.

Agree on letting everyone taste the new Symbian first.. And now that Symbian is gonna get incremental updates, forgetting Symbian^4, Symbian^5.. this ‘tablet’ will be more feasible and attractive to developers to work on compared to before.. 🙂

A Symbian netbook and tablet was,is and will always be a very good business strategy for Nokia. Thought about it when I saw the N95(yes 3 years ago) plugged into TV. With the new CEO and symbian ^3 maybe something could be in the works 🙂

Yesterday, I downloaded software update (important one). See what happens? New icons for Symbian 3 widgets (ie brower). Really cool! Now we can witness the UI evolving already.

Next week I am promised to get latest Symbian 3 branch (PR 2.0 release). I will make a browser demo for people who want to see before making a buy decision on N8.

Today, I visited a Finnish friend who is using IPHONE 4. I just surfed a bit using safari, played a bit Angry birds and randomly played around for about less than 10 mins. The batter drains effectively. The friend also played a bit my N8 and said he would not buy IPhone4 if N8 was released half year ago when he bought IPHONE 4. He also mentioned our common friend currently living in UK was very happy with his N8 bought in UK.

I dont see any update for my N8. I tried updating through phone and Ovi Suit but there is no update available to download. Can you specify what update you are talking about?

          October 23, 2010 at 10:30 pm

click menu key (in the front)-> application->sw update

then you will install all the available updates.

After you have got the important software update, you can configure auto-update also or you can just update manually. I use manual update only.

Configure this sw update to your homescreen as a shortcut if you are don’t like to have auto-update.

It is interesting. I will ask some people next week if this weekly update will be available globally. Maybe there is technical issues it is not possible for some markets yet.

Configure this sw update to your homescreen as a shortcut if you are don’t like to have auto-update.

@alex: the SW update is still burried in the menus as in s60? no visual info about SW updates on the homescreen?

    • alex68
      October 25, 2010 at 2:15 pm

The homescreen is fully configurable. You just configure it according to your preference. What is the problem now?

      October 25, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Actually in the fist homescreen, there is an icon having 4 configuration including this SW update. I don’t know the name as I have read manual yet. Too busy with kids 😦
