Video: How to sell the Nokia N8 – by Carphone Warehouse

The tech blogosphere is a tough but fickle scene. A device is rarely taken on its own merits. In many places, it’s all about perception, perception, perception, where the stronger your reality distortion field, the better. How people perceive a product is sometimes unfortunately as important as what the product can actually do. Bad thing for Nokia is they’re not the shouty, over bearing, boasty type – but guys you have to be.

Check out how Carphone Warehouse have been bigging up the Nokia N8. They’re the largest retailer of mobilephones in the UK and the largest independent mobile phone retailer in Europe. These guys have a lot of influence when it comes to mobile phone purchases in the UK. In their “Eye Opener” series, CPW staff have been checking out the N8’s features.  They’re all pretty popular online.

Their latest is a general compilation of the N8’s best bits.

  • I love how they’re actually paying attention to the camera – the thing that sets it apart. When the Samsung i8910 HD came out – the first with HD video in UK, NO ONE mentioned this in the adverts. wtf.
  • The fastest Symbian OS Yet (yeah it’s Symbian, but make the most of it) 250 new features including multitasking with VISUAL task manager.
  • Ovi Store – has thousands of apps. For the folks that want deh apps.
  • Ovi Maps  – free world wide navigation software, walking or in car.
  • Nokia N8 is a top range smartphone designed for form and function.

Thank you CPW. I know they’re selling it and have to big it up to do so. When you think about it, the N8 is a great smartphone that’s taking a lot of flack from its naysayers of “hey where’s Android, hey where’s my apple logo”.

    > (yeah it’s Symbian, but make the most of it)

I get the sarcasm but it’s not necessary. The ONLY people in world against Symbian are sad little iPhone and Android fanboys who are now seriously worried by the amazing new Nokia products. Most ordinary people will love the new Symbian unquestioningly, we don’t need to worry 🙂

Note also that the homescreen switching in this video has barely perceptible lag, so it’s actually not bad at all.

Note also it is clearly marketed as a high end device, to compete with the best already out there (and the N8 wins easily).

Sarcasm perhaps, but even as a Nokia fan I can’t dismiss the fact that it isn’t fully touch optimized and there are some caveats with setting up your phone.

And the homescreen lag is there, it’s just down to the perception of lag. Most homescreens scroll with your swipe. The S3 screen doensn’t and only starts to scroll after your swipe that’s what the lag is. Personally I don’t bother, but for people who use (or used)the A or I OS’es I can understand that it is perceived as lag.

I think they will change the home screen to follow finger in next firmware updates. Actually I do not really care about the delay (not lag) in home screen swipe but I would want to have option for 1 big wallpaper image that moves back there same as Nokia N900.

“I love how they’re actually paying attention to the camera”

Because if you get the camera out of the equation, what advantage there is to N8?

It would be the first smartphone launched in this day and age without any form of camera. 😛

Battery life, build quality, overall specs, totally free satnav, usb otg (I could connect up my DSLR and e-mail/SMS pics taken from the DSLR), HDMI support. Decent core call functionality (which is sadly lacking in android).

And when you ask about “what advantage is there?” you need to append “when compared to a given specific device” and it also depends on precisely what you want out of a phone.

compared to a fast-working smartphone, with no memory errors (see the video of the samsung and htc here).

        but waht i REALLY want, is a fast-and-strong NOKIA device… 🙂

There will be a super fast Symbian 3 phone. You will have to wait a longer time.

Or you can also wait for a Meego and even Symbian 4 phone. I was told Symbian 4 UI would be very fast and fluid, but you may not get as excellent battery life as N8.

Everything is about trade-off and you have to prioritize your needs first.
