All you can eat music with (update, a few) Nokia N8’s from Ovi Music Unlimited (+Poll: were you aware of this?)

UPDATE:Well this teaches me to verify info through twitter alone. This post about all N8s with free OMU is erroneous. Major apologies.

Well this is absolute NEWS to me. I have a major flu going on and my memory’s taking a hit, but I think I’d remember something as major as this if it was given enough of a promotion.

You may have heard about it but why was this not shouted about more to get it buried in our heads as much as “biggest sensor, 12mp, anodized aluminium”?

Normally Comes With Music phones (now Ovi Music Unlimited) are slightly more expensive than their non CWM/OMU counterparts – but the N8 is the same price (well dependent on where you buy it, but you get what I mean).

This is incredible, and such a huge factor to get the N8 on top of its already amazing host of features.

So why wasn’t there a fuss made about this. All you can eat, legal, DRM free songs/albums. TOTAL AWESOMENESS. I’m betting that this would influence a lot of sales if they knew that there’s like 5 million pounds of music FOR FREE.

  • Fantastic way to get all the latest tracks – FOR FREE  – from international songs to local favourites.
  • Now that there’s stronger crack down on digital piracy, this is a great way to stay legal
  • Great way to discover tracks – no need to even try before you buy – just download!
  • Partners the N8 very well – very nice, loud speaker, brilliant through headphones/A2DP headphones or surround sound system.
  • Keep everything you download Forever
  • (Should be possible to play on any device being DRM free.Ovi Blog was misleading about the DRM thing. Apparently it is bundled into OMU. See comments.

@DhruvBhutani and @NormanJ are already enjoying their N8 Ovi Music Unlimited. Go to Nokia Ovi Player and click activate under Ovi Music Unlimited. For some reason it doesn’t work for me 😦 Is it a UK thing? Trial handset thing? Maybe my Uni internet is blocking it. (Seems all you need is an OMU account as there is NO OMU edition of the Nokia N8 – they should all come with it. )

Now the poll. Being Nokia fans, you would probably be more in the know than most. Perhaps I just totally missed the boat on this one :p

Surely that’s a bad joke or a mistake on Nokia’s part.
In the event that this is NOT a bad joke, you have to wonder what the hell Nokia’s PR department is doing.

I know Nokia and the whole Finnish sentiment is about Modesty, but this is way beyond that. Bravado on all fronts is needed in today’s aggressive (and albeit deceitful) land of marketing.

Cannot believe this wasn’t praised to high heaven. I don’t think I even read it in reviews. This is such a major selling point on top of many others for N8.

We all know if iPhone 4 had this we wouldn’t hear the last of it. NORMAL price iPhone 4, NO subcription. FREE all you can eat music.

    …but there’s a OMU version and it’s 100€ more.

  3. October 13, 2010 at 10:37 pm

this isn’t DRM free – see here: http://music.ovi.com/in/en/pc/help/comeswithmusicoverview/

“Music can only be downloaded and played on your registered PC and mobile – it cannot be burnt to CD or copied”

    • October 13, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Oh I see. I was mislead by the Ovi Blog when they mentioned

“. All the tracks you have downloaded in the past are now also DRM-free.”

“Tracks downloaded from the Ovi Music a la carte store is DRM-free.”
Tracks downloaded from the Ovi Music a la carte store is DRM-free.

Seems DRM is bundled with OMU

I just ordered my N8. Does this apply to USA customer, cause as long as i know ovi music doesnt support USA.

I don’t think it applies for the US. But, you can use your N8 with the Zune pass which is pretty good for $14 per month you get unlimited music and you get to keep 10 tracks per month.

All N8´s come bundled with a 6 months OMU service here in Brazil, but I guess it´s just a renamed CWM service.

    And it ISN´T DRM-free.

I tested it under the UK store and it seems that the handsets are region locked for OMU services possibly because of licensing issues. As it clearly stated that my OMU device was not cleared for the UK region… Did you import your handset ?

If you read this posting on OVI from Oct. 6 it states that OVI Music Unlimited is not available in the USA currently.

    Hello Ben,

We’re constantly launching new markets and once we have more details on any launch we will share the news with you. Right now we don’t have any further announcements to make.

      Opps forgot Ben’s question.
“Do you have plans to come to the US?”

its not being advertised as this only applies for like 4-5 countries… i dont remeber which and which, but Indonesia is one for example. if Nokia dosnt advertise that there, it would rrly be surprising

There is a OMU bundled version of the N8 in Finland.

Yeah, and it costs 100 € more than the normal, and is apparently only available with the green N8. Actually, I’m not sure if you can even get the green without OMU.
