HyperX .sis mod available for the Public – 30FPS 720p and Near RAW minimal image compression for higher detail

hyperX has included a comparison to show just how well the camera performs when compression is reduced. btw, N8 already resolves more detail than quite a few digital cameras. e.g. CANON IXUS 130 and even Sony HX5.

We saw in excitement the renowned hyperX mod Nokia’s latest flagship – the N8; first bumping up image quality to reduce pretty much all the compression so that the already high detail N8 produces something quite remarkable for such a compact phone. Next we have the bump up of 30FPS from 25FPS for the 720p video (original file is incredible). I’m not sure if this includes the next mod of continuous Autofocus.

It is now available for public usage. Well, you can get it yourself for your N8 – not totally sure about the safety of it for your device. So Note: This is probably unsupported by Nokia so install at your own risk.

DOWNLOAD it here from hyperX’s site: hx-custom-roms.com

It’s a simple .SIS file. Bluetooth it over to N8 and install from the N8 or install via PC/Ovi Suite or copy to memory card/mass memory and manually install.

Thanks to Keith for the heads up.

I was reading GSMArenas overview of the N8 and they spoke of the Video recordings Digital Zoom stating that the quality is bad unless you go to 2X Digital Zoom (as the camera doesnt use the 12mpx sensors information until its at 2X)

and Damian chimed in stating that due to Binning + FPS it isn’t possible to get the sensor to work at full when Digital Zooming until 2X+

So im wondering if HyperX’s increased frame rate will affect the digital zoom?

I understand the N8 does well on the video (720p/25 fps) which is on par with the best in class. Its 3x digital zoom makes it stand out against the competitors. But smart zooming works when at about 2x. However, before 2x, N8 does not stand out the competition.

This is the bug all about. Nothing REALLY bad at all.

oh yeah i know but i was wondering since Damian said the frame rate was one of the issues of this

i was wondering what effect HyperXs 5fps more has on the digital zoom

ah i got a reply from HyperX he says that he finds the digital zoom works fine even at 30fps; however he suggests turning off the “video stabilisation” says it doesn’t work correctly and drops frames

While it’s clear that the “RAW” image quality is better – it’s not a massive amount better – and what’s impressive about this is actually how good the standard JPEGs straight from the camera are. Very impressive pixel level information and quality even when viewed at 100%

It doesn’t come with continuous autofocus in video. The continuous auto-focus has a bug he hasn’t been able to find and fix yet and so it’s not good for public usage yet.

I don’t know if it’s related, but he said on a previous post he had bricked his N8. It could have been anything that went wrong but since he was messing with the camera I can suppose this was caused by this bug but it’s only speculation. He has managed to get his N8 back alive though.

The mods are great of course, but I have to ask why Nokia didn’t do all this in the first place. I can’t help thinking there’s some serious drawback that made the camera team not do this so easily up front, and why they are now working to produce an official version – almost like there is something they are trying to work around that perhaps this HyperX mod doesn’t know about or take care of and which would eventually damage the device.

Also of course, if you install this mod you will then have to choose between it and the next N8 firmware with better browser (if it’s not an app), QT, other bug fixes etc. With the official N8 camera improvements you get everything 🙂

Of course Nokia won’t implement this officially, the uncompressed jpeg is 10+MB!!! My dslr raw files are only 6-8MBs. Consumers will be shocked by how fast their 16GB storage filed up. The 24fps for 720p video seems to be design for TV and DVD conversion, for which 24 fps is the industrial standard.

However, the default compression levels for photos seems ridiculous, 2MB jpeg really doesn’t do a 12mp camera justice. I hope Nokia would add a “high” quality setting for the photo camera.

As far as future upgrade goes, since the mod is a .sis files you sign yourself, I don’t think Nokia can or will prevent you to install it on any version of your N8.
