Video: Nokia N8 versus HTC G2 (T-Mobile G2) – Killer audio from the N8

An overlooked feature in Nokia Nseries phones is their distinct ability to capture crystal clear audio during video recording. It’s often ignored but it plays a big part in the video playback experience. How often have you had to listen to tinny, screechy, shitty audio playback because the phone (and often digital camera) could not handle it?

N8 is a class above the rest, rejoining the N93 and N93i in the ability to record in STEREO audio which gives a beautiful depth to your videos.

Note, based on the shadows it seems both cameras are pointed towards the light (hence the brightness in the video, particularly on the N8)Just look how much better the N8 is able to handle that bright light, as to still capture the background but not to darken the main subject. The HTC G2 is extremely dark, the faces hidden in the shadow.

Also note that they mention a sample by iPhone but I can’t find it.

I think if you put the Nokia N8 into 480p and G2 on 720p you’ll get similar quality. Based on these two samples anyway.

Paused at the point where they say parking lot. N8 on the right, G2 on the left

Actually, the historical mission of Symbian 3 is to combat against Android.

Not really. Its mission is to increase the Symbian shares again as Symbian is for low/mid end phones. And its doin great!
MeeGo on the other side will challenge Android/iOS/WP7/WebOS. And It has the potential to win easily! Hope Nokia and Intel do it right and shut up all the North American blogs’ mouths.

Btw, the sound on N8 is clearly unbeatable! Its because of the 2 digital microphones. N86 had the same digital mics and We all know how awesome it’s audio quality was!
And I bet iPhone 4’s video was over-saturated and I bet Aaron would be looking red in iPhone’s video! N8 keeps it real and thats what I like. 🙂

The video is better on the n8, but the audio is much better.
I’m amazed how much better the audio on the n8 is.

Symbian France compares the coverflow between the N8 and Iphone, i must say the N8 coverflow is quite impressive; i was concerned that it would be laggy (they’ve requested embedding to be disabled so i don’t know if this will work)

The fact that they did this in a parking lot shows you how much time and effort they put into this video.

This is more a stress test than anything else. The subject is backlit which is incredibly difficult for most video cameras to handle, but the N8 shows of incredibly well, giving good detail in the shadows and highlights.

Neither is representative of what each camera can do, but the N8 definitely comes out ahead. I wish they spent the 30 seconds to spin around and shoot with a little better lighting so that you can compare video quality in more normal situations.

Part of me also thinks the N8 lens is a bit smudged.
