Video: Answer to Gizmodo’s “Usability test” of the Nokia N8

Gizmodo recently did a “test” of the Nokia N8, plying the N8 onto the hands of a user who has most likely never touched a symbian phone, and one that has the finger speed of an arthritic quadriplegic.

Stupidly for gizmodo, Usability is one thing the N8 is great at. It IS a usable handset. If  you cannot work the N8, you don’t deserve to be let outside on your own, let alone have a mobile phone.

On the plus side, giving the N8 to a complete stranger and STILL being able to navigate the phone pretty well is a BIG plus. Great job Gizmodo.

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n8_gets_lots_of_stick_in_early_reviews_we_wonder_why-news-1973.php

The Nokia N8 started shipping this week and reviews of the Finnish company’s latest flagship are spreading like wildfire. Checking out the first batch of those we noticed a certain trend, which we cannot quite explain. It seems that for some reason most of the reviewers don’t give the handset a fair chance and go a bit too far with their criticisms…

….We can go on but you should have gotten the idea by now. Just to be clear – we don’t have anything against any those sites. On the contrary, we feel like they are all pretty great and are daily reads for all of us here at GSMArena. It’s just that we feel they are not being perfectly fair on this particular occasion and the N8 is much too important to just let that slip.

Oh from that it seems Mr Eldar Murtazin is off on the RAMPAGE with his pixon 12. Don’t worry. He’s not the only one with the N8 or a pixon 12. I’m not sure if I’ll even bother discussing it to be honest. I thought this was supposed to make Symbian fans cry, but no, it makes me laugh.

GSMArena make points about that – something instantly obvious is why Eldar is shooting 9MP widescreen with N8 but 12MP on Pixon12.

THANKS man, updated the post. Watch eldar go. N8’s getting under his skin so much he’s doing additional testing to show his Samsung masters are the best.

Take that Gizmodo! Just look at the N8 go! Its actually REALLY fast!
And the camera app! Its like 3 times faster than iPhone 4!
And about the email app, this guy clicked on the photo app accidently and so I guess he lost some time. But dang N8 is FAST!

You know, people keep saying that Engadget are serious Nokia haters but I think Gizmodo are more of a Nokia hater than Engadget. Not saying that Engadget isn’t biased, it is. But certainly not as much as gizmodo. The guy in Gizmodo’s video was like slower than a turtle and would wait 5 seconds before hitting the icon, would type slower than a kid! I could do the same with the other 2 and prove N8 to be faster than them (which N8 actually is!)

Gizmodo have no integrity. They HAVE to make iPhone 4 and Android look better. Given the truth is the N8 is better, how do they do this? There is only way. They lie. It’s that simple folks.

        October 8, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Android is not a phone! The Nokia N8 has a hdmi, surround, 12mp camera anda that’s it! The processor is slow, the screen hasa lower resolution, etc…

    • pgp
      October 8, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Nokia N8 (680MHz) vs iPhone (1GHz)! Nokia has slow fps than the iPhone, slower GPU, etc… and you say it’s faster… You must have a basic math problem…

      • Keith
        October 8, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Do you know that this isnt about Math??

N8 has a slower CPU but its GPU is the best on the market!
Plus, S^3 is a very light OS and doesnt need 1 GHz to function fast! iOS and android need that. S^3 has twice as many features as Android or iOS and still uses less power!

EX: I have a PC with 2GB RAM, 2.4 GHz dual core processor with ATI Radeon 3850 (I upgraded it) and the other computer has 4GB RAM and 2.8 GHz CPU with ATI Radeon 3450 HD GPU. The first PC runs on XP and the second one runs on Vista. But the one running on XP with lower specs runs MUCH faster than the vista one. Why? Because 1. XP is lighter than Vista and 2. It has a better GPU.

PC2 gets all hot when I play a 1080p video on YouTube but PC1 has no problems. It still has lower specs but performs MUCH better!

        The same goes with smartphones………

        • pgp
          October 9, 2010 at 2:47 am

The GPU is faster BUT not the best on the market!
iOS works on old iPhones it doesn’t need a 1GHz processor not even Android needs that (example: HTC Wildfire has a 528MHz processor, runs the latest Android version and it’s fast).
They are Unix and Linux based that means they are really fast and reliable.
S^3 has twice as many features as Android or iOS!? Can you show me that?
What will you say when they change O.S. to Windows Mobile 7…? 😛

        Watch

And yes, I have math problem.

        I got some numbers:
680 resources used for about 300
        I still got 380

You got 1000 resources used for about 990
        You got 10 left.
Why dou you think iPhone doesn’t support multitasking?

Tell me how many names of unix/Linux do you know actually? 1999 I was one of the first Symbian pilot developers at Nokia. I worked for the first communicator 9000 (first full Qwerty phone) at that time.

Where is George? Is he going to show up in this post?

Yesterday, he referenced this Gizcrapgang’s video to me and mentioned typing on the fruit faster than N8 and blabla… I was not interested in crapgang at all so did not check it at all before I blabla… back to him.

And then this George like an opportunist cut my reply and utilized the part that favored his point best…

Wow, you guys miss me, I feel so loved.

Go back to what I said, if the test was “usability” what they should really do is go back and regardless of how long it takes to type / click something, count the number of keystrokes / page changes it requires to do an action. That would be a better gauge. Again, this is measure usability which should be an issue of the OS and app and have nothing to do with HW per se because that will always get better over time. Go back and read what I said.

BTW, I did say that the Gizmodo guy was typing really slow.

        Feel VALIDated? 😉

You want REAL proof that the N8 is better than the iPhone 4 or top Android phones and really has fans of them spooked? The flack the N8 is getting from certain quarters. This is classic human behaviour. Something makes you feel threatened and uncomfortable and you lash out.

Man – it’s OBVIOUS to even a stupid person that the N8 is better in almost all respects. This is EASY to see. If you love iPhone or Android (etc) and have nailed your allegiance to that mast, how then do you handle something better coming along? You attack it that’s what. And you play dirty. You lie, you cheat, whatever. Many people wouldn;t behave like this of course. But think how much HYPE there has been around iPhone and Android for so long. People have idolised them. Simple. And those idols are being shattered. And some people really don’t like this.

Hence what gsmarena is talking about. But great this is happening. The walls are starting to crumble. iPhone and Android are losing their crown. Nokia is back and the N8 is GREAT!

Read the specs before saying such a crap!
      Nokia N8 | iPhone 4
      Processor: 680MHz | 1 GHz A4
Memory: 16 GB storage, 256MB RAM, 512 MB ROM | 16/32 GB storage, 512 MB RAM
Display: AMOLED, 16M colors | LED-backlit IPS TFT, 16M colors
      Camera: 12 MP, 4000×3000 pixels | 5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, LED flash
      Video: Yes, 720p@25fps | 720p@30fps, LED video light, geo-tagging
      Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n | 802.11 b/g/n
      Talk time: Up to 12 h 30 min (2G), Up to 5 h 30 min (3G) | Up to 14 h (2G), Up to 7 h (3G

Symbian^3 just sucks when compared to Android or iOS!

N8 is better!? In your dreams!

hey dudes!, This is exactly the kind of video answer I was looking for!
I did the email, getting directions and taking pictures Tests with my old N97 and i wasnt as slow as the Gizmgodo guy using the N8,
i am very glad of bloggers like Jay Montano, that keeps us well informed about Nokia, good work!

Ha, read you’re comment and just had to try as well. The email took a bit longer, but navigation was just as fast as the guy who made this video. Taking a photo was a bit slow though, but hey I did the test on a N97 Mini unlike a N8.

I dont visit gizmodo but looks like they are the in a competition with engadget on who is the biggest Nokia basher among them.
Gsmarena rocks! They are one of my favorite sites.
Here is a part of my comment from the previous article regarding gsmarena:
The photos of the devices they post in their reviews are the best on the internet along with their detailed review.

Homescreen filled with shortcuts will get you that look. So in a way it isn’t a good test since you have customized the phone to do the tasks quickly. But then again, you are making use of the capability of the phone so in that perspective it is a gooed test. 😛

      • alex68
        October 4, 2010 at 10:02 am

Of course, the widget configuration for homescreen counts the usability of N8.

        • Phil
          October 4, 2010 at 11:06 am

Look closely at those shortcuts. There are “names” under each shortcut, that is not possible in symbian 3.

Wth? Who did that video? Nokia itself? Whit updated firmware?

Hi.. I’m posting this from Singapore.. This is my first comment on this site. So, first n foremost I’d like to congratulate the team at mynokiablog for these great articles n links to all things Nokia.. I’m a big fan. c”,)
Its great to see somebody ‘getting down n dirty’ standing up for Nokia since they can’t do it themselves.. or probably they just can’t be bothered to crush these pests from Engadget n Gizmodo.. I guess these American techblogs just started launching an ‘All American Crush Nokia Campaign’; probably sponsored by none other than Steve Jobs himself out of his own pocket change ehh..?? Its too damn obvious, its not funny anymore.. Keep up the good work guys.
By the way, I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to open the gsmarena link rebutting the Engadget’s, Gizmodo’s n Eldar’s bias n character killing reviews on the N8 since this morning for hours on end, on my N900, laptop, netbook.. all was futile..
Alas just this now, I tried opening through a proxy server (www.turbohide.com) n waaalaaaah.. Its there..!! But why does it have to be through a proxy server?? Hmmmmm… I wonder why…
