I don’t understand how everyone except engadget can get the N8 to produce such fine detail in the pixels? Now if only there was an iPhone 4 here…
(BTW anyone found any SLR comparisons? I’d just like to see how it fares against the true cream of the crops)

If you're reading this, then this demonstrate the N900 can use the native wordpress.com site for blogging. No app download, just raw wordpress pretty much how it would appear on your desktop....albeit within the confines of a 800x480 pixel wide screen. Note screenshot below is zoomed.

No, not preordered. Though I am getting quite compelled into running to the Nokia Shop in Manchester and getting one. I’ll find a way to get my hands on it again 😀

No I haven’t either I got my E72 earlier this year I don’t think my pockets would be too happy about me buying an N8 but all this excitement and buzz around the N8 is surly make want one. Originally I decided for the N9, but the N9, I don’t think will have a camera as good as the N8, I think the N9 will concentrate on computing power rather than multimedia just like the N900.
I am still undecided then there is the C7, E7 and the C6 to consider waaaaay tooo many choices my head is going blow…………
I can now give you one more choice that makes your head blow even more…
There will be a super fast S3 device. Guess what makes it very fast?

dnt wait for n9 guys. it will take one more year. buy n8 after n9 comes to shop buy after few months the price also will reduce. so go for n8 . my guess n9 will release 2011 q3

And Jay, I TOTALLY agree with you that Engadget seriously didn’t do justice to N8’s camera. Whoever took the pictures was a HORRIBLE photographer. It seemed as if he had never taken pictures before.

For a tiny little “camera phone” it does an OK job no? haha.
Shame engadget went down that route. Ah well, they wouldn’t be engadget if they didn’t piss on Nokia now would they.
They have a moral obligation to tear down every non-american company bar HTC, who only get a pass due to them using an American-made OS.
Jk jk. But in all honesty, the pictures published EVERYWHERE else look a million miles better than the stuff they posted on their site. It makes me wonder whether they even cared to use it properly or just would rather tear this device down to support their own biased and jaded opinions. Either way, I won’t be using their reviews of ANY Nokia products (and as a by-product Apple products) as a basis for my purchases.
I just no longer trust their views.
Just to play the other side, they’re not comparing cameras. They’re comparing output images and what is most pleasing and to be honest the iPhone images are colorful and contrasty, just what that segment wants.
You want a nice baseline image that you can post process and make nice prints, sure the N8 will win, but that wasn’t their criteria.
Nokia should have set the default at +1 vivid and +1 or +2 contrast so that customers get some pop out of their images right out of the box. If you’re sophisticated user then you set everything flat, but that shouldn’t be the default.
Damian Dinning explained that with the N8, they would use less postprocessing and output images that are closer to reality, like a real camera would do.
This means that, unlike other phones, it doesn’t favour oversaturation (which makes your photos look like they were shot in Mexico when they were shot in London on a rainy day) and edge-enhancement algorithms (which artificially remove blurring, apparently giving more crispy images, but in reality creating artificial edges where there shouldn’t be).
You can postprocess the pictures later if you want (or just change the camera settings).
OK job? It does an incredible job! it takes better pics than this (and many other) dedicated Digital Cameras! I always love the quality of Nokia devices 🙂
These will surely bring shame on engadget.

engadget snap photo before N8 finish focus, they are so dumb trying to belittle N8 12mp.
I really hope they put the same camera mechanism in the N9. Shooting RAW with this camera using fCamera would be sick.
If they put this camera on N9, then N8 would be a joke. I mean, its made as a multimedia monster. So it has to have the best multimedia capabilities of all. And it does. And putting the same camera on N9 would be a dumb move and I don’t think Nokia is dumb enough to do that. They know what they’re doing. N9 will be a mobile computer and you shouldn’t expecting this much from it. Kinda like N900. It didn’t have the best camera. N82 and N86 had way better cams.
And yeah, being able to shoot RAW would be awesome. May be we’ll see that in future updates? You never know it. But I’m pretty sure Nokia will release another really good camera phone in another year or two when N8 starts getting old or Competition increases. But yeah, don’t expect too much from N9. It will be all about MeeGo/being able to perform computer-like tasks on the go.
@Keith – We’ll never see RAW on the N8. Wouldn’t make sense for that segment.
If Nokia cripples the N9, it becomes a joke. Nokia needs one phone that has no compromises, MeeGo and all of the great hardware of the E7 and the N8. They don’t need another N900/N800/N810/N… technological curiosity for the geeks.
They already segment waaay too much. If they want to do some, fine. Do it in the mid-range. Don’t handicap the high-end.
Not exactly. N9 will definitely not be the “perfect” device. If you want EVERYTHING on it (qwerty, N8’s camera, and even better specs), it would have to make compromise in terms of its size/thickness. Nokia has been criticized a lot for making thick phones and they certainly wont do that with their flagships. Compromises have to be made with any device. I can guarantee you that N9 wont have an N8-like camera but it will (most likely) have a better camera than E7/C7/C6-01 (i.e. with autofocus and stuff).
The flagship is supposed to be powerful not the thinnest. It can be thin, but doesn’t have to be as thin as the iPhone 4 or even N8.
Honestly I could care less about megapixels but care more about sensor size and the lens. If they did an 8 Megapixel 1/1.8″ sensor with the same lens, that would be an awesome combo as well. All I know is that the N900 camera sucks, even with RAW and with the sensor profiled to get more accurate color. The file just falls apart in the shadows. It’s pretty sad really.
In fact, it does make sense. It´s already got a bigger sensor than most compact cameras. Considering that some of them already shoot RAW, I cannot see anything wrong about the N8 shooting RAW, too.

As far as I know, every phone, no matter the segment, have their own compromises.
You have an utopic view.
If you wanna a good camera, no other current FLAGSHIP device would suffice other than the N8.
If you wanna something that does it all, there´s the battery life compromise.
Allow me to clarify. For the flagship, I am willing to allow compromises in terms of size and cost.
Inferior performance whether it be the camera or the processor is unfitting the purpose of the flagship product. So no, I’m not expecting the most powerful handset at the cheapest price yet somehow still being the thinnest.

Well, may be you’re one of the few. But you should consider the fact that MANY people out there would want the phone to be sleek and very functional. Besides, haters like engadget/gizmodo would always be present to brainwash people into not buying a Nokia if Nokia ever does something wrong (even if its a negotiable thing)
The can never be a perfect phone IMO. The iPhone 4 (which people say is the best phone on market) has SO many compromises. But people are ok with it since it does a good job on the features it provides. Thats what I want from MeeGo phone. Not just features, but features that function in a way that would beat other phones easily. And I (and many others) will be OK if Nokia has to make some compromises with the phone (which I’m sure they will
N8, E7, C6-01, C7 all have compromises. N8 doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard, a camera protector, and a bigger battery. E7 has a qwerty but the same battery which might not be that great. It also doesn’t have a great camera (although its pretty good for amateurs).
So if you still want a phone that doesn’t compromise, try building one yourself and you’ll see why its not possible.
I amended my statement. I’m willing to compromise cost and size which is reasonable. I don’t want it to be a perfect phone for everyone, just those that want the most power and flexibility in one phone.
The iPhone is full of compromises. Why? Because there’s one iPhone. They don’t segment into business, multimedia, whatever like Nokia does and they had to pick the best fit for them. And it’s worked out well.
Nokia has plenty of compromise solutions. Want the thinnest? Do the N8 candybar. Want keyboard, get the E7. Want a super powerful linux the beast phone that goes toe to toe with the behemouths from Samsung and HTC? Well that’ll be the N9. Just because you don’t care about a powerful internet tablet that has great features doesn’t mean that other have to do the same.
Go buy the N8 and be happy or the E7. For those that aren’t happy with those solutions, the N9 (supposed high-end) should try to address all of their needs.
Why would Nokia cripple their top of the line? Not sure why that is a sound strategy when Symbian gives you lots of options for everything else.
I side with George too with this. in my opinion, A flagship device that could do it all, even if it’s 2-3 mm thicker (for better camera, better battery, etc) is acceptable, and there will be a certain segment (like us) that would love to get those. just opinion, though..
I agree with their design philosophy but they should have anticipated that consumers want a processed image and just kicked up the defaults and set them based on the masses.
How dumb have people become, if they cannot change it to Vivid preset?! I think people that stupid shouldn’t be allowed to live without a guardian much less handle money and buy stuff.
C’mon. Why do we have to get into name calling? Let’s be civil. Take a deep breath and let me reframe this for you.
In the context of the comparison by Engadget they were looking at the output as default. A majority of users preferred the type of output by the iPhone because that matches what they would like to see straight out of the camera.
So to answer your question, people aren’t stupid and yes they can change settings, but in the context of the comparison which ONLY showed output A vs. output B, the flatter dull looking Nokia lost.
This is marketing, and the guys at NOKIA should have known better but what did they do? They said, we have great specs and they FORGOT how blogs sites do comparison and so they lost this round. I hope they remember the next time and game it so that the next shootout Nokia comes out ahead.
And please, I know you guys are Nokia guys, but don’t get personally offended. Nokia dropped the ball on this one. Sometimes you only have one chance to make a good impression.
From the disassembly photos of the N9 that leaked this summer, it looks like the N9 has a dual LED flash, so at least in that it should be inferior to the N8.
Well, I could care less about flash. I’m more interested in the lens and sensor, but they certainly don’t look like they’re going in the right direction with the N9. It’s too bad FCamera will never be ported to Symbian S^3.
How do you know FCamera will be ported to Symbian? Just curious. I was hoping it would be.
FCamera was written for Linux. Maybe they will port it to Symbian but as far as I know, it’s only a Linux thing so I expect it for MeeGo
That was an VERY early prototype. The final product can be very different.
As a geek, I agree. I want that phone of no compromises. A FLAGSHIP.
So it cannibalizes possible sales of the N8, but it also eats the sales of other competitors as this beast could be too incredible to ignore. Want the best of the best of the best – there’s N9 or at least could have been.
Price point of the N9 should set it apart too. U got the cash, you get the more expensive and more powerful device. N8 at different price point – much more mass market friendly (relatively anyway)
If the flagship isn’t clearly the best hardware wise of all of the Nokia phones then the US tech bloggers will continue to ridicule Nokia. Their old ways of thinking won’t help them in this new world.

No one can deny the pros of fruit’s UX, BUT at a considerable cost of rather capability limitation. I am very sure if it can handle that much stuff like N8, fruit’s UX can be discounted at least 20-30% at best.
Gizcrapgang can lie and brainwash SOME people for SOME time, BUT can’t all people. Neither forever. They have utilized the opportunity of Nokia’s problems to a great extent, I have to agree. Now they really got crazy and have totally lost basic bottom line of business ethics as a tech media. I feel very sorry for them but it is their choice of life.

At least from N8, I can judge that Nokia is on the right direction. Everyone here knows that I am very confident in N8. I have reasons…
I am very sure that the product manager has a long to-do list. But surely they always have their own priorities what should be done first…
For Meego, it needs a LOT MORE work and improvements. Nokia do need to accelerate the improvement and development. N8 was slow for some reasons that I can not tell right now.
But N9 development has been developed entirely by Nokia most experienced people/specialists in Tampere. And I consider the management change can be of help.
After N8’s big success, I can really expect Meego really make Nokia back the King of mobile world!
It is my faith that I would like to share with everyone here. Let’s witness the great times of new Nokia in the coming 6-9 months.
George, you may not give a damn about a Xenon flash but a lot of us do. You say you are willing to compromise on size to get a phone that has it all but in the next breath you are saying that a flash is not a necessity. Surely a Xenon flash would be part of having it all?
You also say you want your phone of choice to default to vivid, unrealistic image outputs. Well then best you choose one that does that as I, and I’m sure many others, far prefer a phone that produces images that are close to reality! If I want to full people into thinking I was experiencing island life while stuck in a city I’ll use Photoshop!
It is comments such as these that me me think an earlier suggestion that you just make your own phone to satisfy your needs might actually be quite valid! Or just by a iPhone as you seem to be quite a fan.
As an African I am finding the comments made on American websites regarding the N8 to be at best humorous, and at worst downright ignorant.
You do realize that for the best image quality the lens and sensor are more important than the flash right? Personally I’d be happy whatever they put for a flash.
No. I didn’t say that I wanted my phone to default to vivid (or at least a bump in contrast). My point is that the default settings should be set to what most customers would want and those that want a flat image can change it to that. I don’t see why you make it seem like its an affront to your values and view of the world. Digital camera manufacturers do this all the time so why not do it for camera phones? It’s just a default setting.

I don’t see what the big deal is. I don’t think I’m alone in wanting the best Nokia can offer all in one phone. Do you think I’m all alone? You think it’s unreasonable, fine. You don’t like my opinion, honestly I couldn’t care less. But if you want to feel hurt and insult someone else, go ahead.
You do realise that in low light conditions – ie when the sun disappears, which if I recall, happens a lot – a xenon flash is actually pretty damn ace, right??
I don’t doubt the technical superiority of the xenon. All I’m saying is that its not something I care about. I have my style others have theirs. If others want it, great, then I hope the N9 has it. I just won’t care if it has an LED flash instead.
