HD Video: Nokia N8 Final Firmware Review?- plus Need for Speed Shift

According to GSMonline.pl, this is the “final version of Symbian^3” for the Nokia N8. Is that as in final firmware? It’s dated (At least on the phone) to only be 10th September. If that’s correct and this N8 has the latest firmware then this should be the commercial firmware that we’ll be getting (and then some regional variations).

Thus, no excuse for any delays, bugs, whatsoever having waited so long for this handset?

  • Usual N8 hands on demo
  • YouTube can play flash or via the N8’s own media player – like all Symbian handsets.
  • Need for Speed Shift – click HD to watch the 720p recording of this video to at least better appreciate the N8’s widescreen gaming. NFS looks very fluid.. btw, NFS got exited via menu button, not crashing. Though I’m wondering what portion got cut. Crash? Delay? Personal info from call on the screen? Who knows. There seems to be subtle cuts in a few places. Perhaps to tidy the video up? I’d rather see all the hold ups if possible future video folk. Just blur if there are sensitive info.
  • Maps is opening up pretty quick, (and it wasn’t already open). GPS lock was subsequently a couple of seconds after viewing the map. Pretty good for those moments you just want to check “where am i?” and then the subsequent navigation.
  • Other apps do open up quicker (by symbian standards), though it would help IMMENSELY, if there were more animations to distract you from the loading.
  • Screen Rotation takes awfully long – BUT – recording phones on a flat surface – it’s difficult to get the angle to rotate the phone (whilst still being in the view finder). Happened many a times with me on the N900 and we’ve seen that it’s ridiculously fast at rotating from landscape to portrait and vice versa (when available).
  • Loading sites over 3G (Poland) seems sufficiently quick, especially with heavy flash. It’s worth noting though that the N8 will get a much improved (hopefully anyway) browser soon after launch.

Looks pretty awesome to me! However, I THINK that NFS Shift had a little low framerate. seemed like 20-22 to me. Asphalt 5 works crazy smooth, not sure why this happened. I still dont like the browser and so I’ll be really waiting for the Qt browser. and when he quit NFS shift, there seemed to be a glitch, the screen was black and the sound kept repeating for a while. But the rest was smooth as butter 🙂

NFS Shift seemed to be slow but its maybe because he had 3 or 5 apps in the background while he starting the game 🙂 When he had closed the game maybe it could be much smoother 😀 But the qt browser is that what im also waiting of cause the nokia browser sucks 😀

      • September 12, 2010 at 10:19 am

i consider the actual browser enough good offcourse android still the best waiting for nokia v8 browser so..

    • September 12, 2010 at 10:23 am

ya i verified too low framerate not super smooth as iphone (3gs) but anyway stilly playable..

      anyway no excuse it crashed..

I didn’t see as crash, he pushed a button to cut it.

        • September 12, 2010 at 3:13 pm

ya you right i verified it better now..no crash, my mistake sorry 🙂

There have been cuts at 6:54 and at 6:59. The first means nothing, but the second came with a different white of the background which indicates that the video was not recorded in one piece. Who knows if something happened to worry about.

There is nothing wrong here.I can explain this. I just reproduced it with Angry birds game.

The gaming doesn’t support portrait mode. The gamer pressed front button which is the application button, so the game went to background and screen switched to homescreen.

According to my knowledge, N8 has much stricter qa control for N8 release testing. Nokia can not afford N97 like flop anymore.

N8 will be a high quality product in term of the release tests.

Because there was also screen rotation, it took a little bit more time to switch screen.

    not impressed by the ui

why nokia cant put the toolbar in the empty space in option and back bar?

nokia internet radio is the best example of where nokia messes up, sometimes i think its too big for its own good.

even if they couldnt port the program over, atleast let us stream from the browsers no?

I can 100% assure the indoor image quality is high due to the xenon flash.

    • September 12, 2010 at 10:51 am

8910 lacks multitouch ,very important, feature today…

      • September 12, 2010 at 10:55 am

n8 gpu ,theoretically, most powerfull against 8910

          September 12, 2010 at 12:33 pm

n8 even beats samsung i9000 galax s miles in many categories in GLbenchmark tests.

apple does do well in the area what many people think is important

web browsin(fucaaaak nodownload plugin), music player ui, and gaming

it means that nokia needs to combine n and x series into one series, and put more effort to gaming.

why nokia want to have ui change in symbian 4 not in symbian 3? They reallydo not understand which thing has the first priority. Many dumb people 90% of the world will think symbian 3 just an improved symbian 1.

    Nokia deserve this task
like to convience dumb people symbian is powerful
    symbian 3 is different
symbian 3does not need fast cpu and large ram

itis only phone price that keep nokia alive

but S3 IS an improvment than S1… a GREAT improvment (more than 250 new features) but not a revolution which could be S4 next year…

    • September 12, 2010 at 12:20 pm

      S3 is the evolution
      S4 the revolution!

      • alex68
        September 12, 2010 at 12:25 pm

You got it. S4 will take more time for Nokia to develop. Before S4 is ready, S3 needs to fill the market gap. But because of QT, it won\t affect end user and developer perception so much.

Alex, are you ready to spread the ‘good news about N8’ or the ‘final decision’ on it, now ?
You and Andre wanted to keep them until the weekend. What’s going on ?

is symbian s60v3.3 in the pipeline? I mean non touch symbian s60 v3 feature pack 3!

They can consider pack 3 is touch and type.
Just like s40 type and touch

i will like a nokia phone that iphone users can envy and cant not complaint about!

    good things on nokia n8:

    1. 12mpixel camera
    2. HDMI
    3. USB on the go
    4. ovi maps
    5. FM transmitter

    and the bad things is:

    1. Screen resolution 640×360
    2. RAM & CPU
    3. screen size is small
    4. lagging & jerk
    5. web browser

      September 13, 2010 at 1:15 pm

You forgot it has one of the most powerful GPUs ever, which is partly why it doesn’t need a fast CPU
