Video: Super smooth Pinch and Zoom in Ovi Maps demoed in 25 minute Nokia N8 Truck in Hamburg

In all the Nokia N8 demoes we’ve seen thus far, Ovi Maps has only been shown to zoom with the zoom bar. Multitouch is available on the N8 but it was not yet working for Ovi Maps (though it was mentioned to be coming soon)

In this 25 minute video (Skip to 24:05) you’ll see firstly, a very, very smooth panning of the maps and more importantly, super smooth pinch and zooming of the maps. There are no reloading of the maps/obvious rescaling – just quick pinch and you’re zoomed in.

Sorry but the N8 just TOTALLY beats every other device out there in the market. Better still it’s cheaper than all the other high end devices out there, so people get the best for the cheapest. Nice.

That is great! Does anyone know if Ovi Maps has speed limits on the map? I am still hoping that I can port my Garmin xt to the N8. It only works in portrait mode on the n97, so I can hope.

Well it does not state on map, but you will be notified by a color code and by the voice guidance. Personally, it is annoying to me, so it’s off.

Is ovi maps written in qt?

Oh i still can see the zoom bar in the video? They should remove it in retail firmware

would be nice to see garmin xt ported to n8, more detailed map data.

why remove it? what if people like using the zoom bar?

      August 29, 2010 at 5:00 pm

I think they should and will keep the zoom bar.
Assume you are in the car and due to some reason needed to hold the phone in your hand while driving to zoom in a little bit on the map.

That time, you can’t use pinch and zoom with one hand, that time zoom bar comes to picture.

I hope they’ve made it possible to move the map around whilst navigating, so you can easily review the route. Not being able to is a really annoying part of Ovi maps atm.

The phone itself looks really good and smooth.

YES, EXACTLY. This is SO needed – panning and zooming a route.

“this phone could be good choice”

LOL. A new browser IS coming very soon, but even without it this phone is DEFINITELY the best choice on the market of any phone out there.

Lol what a fanboy…pls open your mind
for me N8 with some improvments (browser first) could be ONE OF THE BEST choice in the smartphone’s market ,not the best one, offcourse iphone/android are not inferior….

          August 30, 2010 at 11:29 am

Oh dear, I think you have a mental blockage that is simply unable to open your mind beyond iPhone/Android. Sorry this has happened to you.

Hopefully you can see the light and see how much more open and more powerful the N8 is than any Android/iPhone announced or on the market.

Symbian^3 + the N8 hardware means the competition simply has no chance. Hope you see the light one day.

i can tell you what he told the boyz about nokia maps.
He has a pre Version of Nokia Maps 3.05 installed on his N8 (in the retail version there will be Nokia Maps 3.04 preinstalled).
Maps 3.05 will have pinch to zoom and faster scrolling.

    • Jim
      August 29, 2010 at 11:34 am

so the new ovi maps 3.05 will not be available when the product will be released?

        August 30, 2010 at 11:30 am

I don’t think we should assume anything. It may well be ready and installed, or might be coming soon. The great news is it’s free, and will be easily available one way or another.

How do you download these youtube videos for editing with Camtasia Studio 7?

        August 29, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I use Flash Video Downloader add-on for Firefox when want to get videos from the Tube.

In other cases, when I can’t download, I use the Camtasia Recorder(part of Camtasia Studio) to record the video from the screen. 😉
