C7 preview

The all knowing Eldar has posted another preview of a Nokia device, this time the S^3 powered C7. As is customary he speaks little to the functionality and more to the flashiness of the interface, once again stamping on it’s lack of novelty or spice.

His conclusion?

“Those who are accustomed to Symbian and know this OS will find the model attractive. It offers few interesting games, austere and outdated interface. Taken together it means that Nokia C7 will not attract new customers, but Nokia fans will choose it quite consciously. After all it is the best value for money on Symbian S^3.”

Give it a read if so inclined at the link below.

looks like a good phone but I’m better off with N8, albeit this phone will sell pretty well as Eldar says in his review.
One thing I noticed is that the screen is a bit too glossy. Perhaps its because of the white model? Nonetheless, it looks great as a mid-end phone.

Also, it would have been better if Nokia had put in a Carl Zeiss Lens to guarantee the best image quality. However, seeing that the C6 takes great pics too while not having a Carl Zeiss Lens, Nokia might just pull it off with this kind of camera.

Great to see Eldar not so pissed off at a Nokia Device 😉

      > reat to see Eldar not so pissed off at a Nokia Device

Really? You care what he thinks that much? The man’s totally discredited.

Me – I just look at the pictures. Eldar’s opinion isn’t worth 2 cents (/pence). In fact, one can generally take the opposite of what he says, to be the truth.

Eldar: “austere and outdated interface. Taken together it means that Nokia C7 will not attract new customers”
Eldar’s thoughts: “I LOVE Android!(/iPhone) And to protect my paycheques from other companies I MUST criticise Nokia ALWAYS!”
The reality: “S^3 is bloody amazing, highly competitive, and offers tens of millions of consumers who don’t want to get ripped off my overpriced Apple and Android rubbish, a beautiful little piece of technology”

actually, I read it as well, and I think he is wrong. The C7 is a solid device, Eldar does not like S^3, and it is showing in his reviews of S^3 devices.

Read Eldar commentary. I would avoid saying review since his prose is full of unsubstantiated opinion and anti-Nokia bias. He focuses of the plastic elements to the C7 body while avoiding to emphasize the metal battery cover and front facing trim, given mid price positioning of this feature packed smartphone. Observe how critical he is of SAMSUNG Galaxy’s copious use of plastic and compare his commentary (use of descriptors, adjectives, etc.). He has no problem publicly reviewing prototypes, as he has already demonstrated IMHO to be ethically challenged.

the only 2 things that i don’t really like is the speeds switching to menu or changing background… and the keyboard (when i see iphone/android i like very mutch their portrait keyboard

I can tell you first hand that the default Android keyboard SUCKS!
It is terrible in portrait mode.

      August 26, 2010 at 6:34 pm

The Symbian ^3 T9 portrait keyboard is good but many will love a QWERTY portrait on a 3.5″screen.

I think for one-handed use it’s fine. Some people would prefer the Qwerty though

I helped my father setup his HTC Droid Eris the other day, with Android 2.1. Comparing it to my Nokia 5800 (with custom C6 FW), it was not noticeably faster and even laggy at times. The build quality was good and camera decent, but it was not a big step-up from my old 5800. Yes the HTC device is from late last year, but I was expecting a bit more from Android. Frankly, I found the UI to be confused. Maybe I am just used to Nokia’s UI, but I did not find the so called “flashy” nature of Android very compelling. Sorry for the Symbian bashers out there, but I am sure Nokia is on the right path with Symbian and Meego. As for the C7, I do believe that the UI will be quite refined when released and given its feature list at a competitive price point…it should sell well and also regain some Nokia customers. As long as it has a top GPU like the N8 and OVI store momentum builds (e.g.Qt app developments), then the C7 and N8 should both do quite well.

Nothing beat n8, even i doubt nokia n9 can have much better spec than n8

Let’s all remember Nokia has sent the Russian authorities after Eldar (very good Nokia) but I would NOT want to be in his shoes right now.

He’s probably firing off the last few potshots before he is silenced for good 😉 (and no, I don’t mean killed, before you let your imagination run wild!)

Is it just me, or does anyone else feels that it looks like the N82? Minus the keypad and great camera…. =/

      August 26, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Plus a large screen, redesign, and Symbian^3.

No, I think it looks more like a sheep, minus the woolly fur and legs, plus a mobile phone 😉

Just got a mail from nokia saying that nokia music will become OVI music and that OVI Music offers DRM-FREE mp3 downloads. I thought this would be china only, apparantly not :]

  11. Rant
    August 26, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Considering the price this will be going for it might just be a good selling phone. Quality even seems better than my N97 mini of which the plastic screencover on the front hasn’t been stuck on there properly since I bought it.

Just one piece of criticism on S3, why can’t there be icons on the home screen you can place anywhere you like? So far that has been the only thing that irritates me. Those blocky things on the screen just completly F##$ up any background I have in there.

    • Andre
      August 26, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Themes should allow a degree of transparency in the widget but I agree, I’d love to be able to place single icons wherever I wish

it’s called avkon and it will be gone with S^4 😀 . Avkon was design for non touch devices so it’s less flexible . the new orbit(I think) interface qill be designed in qt and it will be more flexible, however I think symbian will lose his power efficiency .

      • Taspa
        August 26, 2010 at 5:50 pm

You are right. Old Avkon is not that flexible. I’ll wait for S^4 just for new UI.

i hope cpu is min almost as N8 680mhz could be great for a middlerange! S3 needs a gpu so there’s a gpu offcourse! 🙂 ..but broadcom as n8??or?

          good anyway for a C7

  13. NeNoRmAl
    August 26, 2010 at 5:11 pm

And what is the GPU on this one? It records and plays 720p videos, but I doubt it’ll have a broadcom like that on N8.

    Right? =]]

    • Andre
      August 26, 2010 at 5:13 pm

They’d probably try to keep a base HW spec so chances are it’s a Broadcomm.

      • GordonH
        August 26, 2010 at 6:26 pm

A good GPU would certainly make the C7 more desirable.

  14. N#O#R#U#L#E#S
    August 26, 2010 at 5:20 pm

i think too..could be a problem then for developers with many devices with different hardware (see android case..)

i think main hardware (cpu/gpu/ram) for X7 C7 N8 so symbian3 devices shall be the same

    but E7 could be different…….;)

    • Andre
      August 26, 2010 at 5:22 pm

They may differ in terms of RAM. But I think they’ll be consistent for the most part

  15. NeNoRmAl
    August 26, 2010 at 5:26 pm

In this case, the only advantages that N8 will end up with, will be the nicer look, greater camera and the solid metal body construction, right?

And the C7 will be way cheaper I suppose…

    N97 and 5800 all over again?Lets hope not! =]

    • Andre
      August 26, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Lets hope not. The N97 was utterly terrible.

        August 26, 2010 at 5:36 pm

        i’ve actually a N97 classic and i’m very satisfied!

        • Keith
          August 26, 2010 at 11:34 pm

I haven’t net ANYONE with an N97 who was satisfied with it! Everyone complained about it. The worst thing about it is the RAM issue. Only about 50MB upon bootup and that was after a few updates. It had like 35 when it was released. And according to Nokia, it was a high end device! I’d NEVER buy an N97 for it’s price. And that’s why n8 will rock. More ram, better processor and better OS.

            August 27, 2010 at 8:10 am

i could agree with you but i buy it used few month ago at only 200eur at this price N97 rocks (offcourse with the latest firmware installed!;)

            August 27, 2010 at 8:22 am

i’ve 5800, 5230 and X6 too but N97 and its superb qwerty are perfect for me…i think my next phone shall be another qwerty with S3 so E7 could be great but i like this C7 too it’s a cheap N8 good value for me 🙂

  16. N#O#R#U#L#E#S
    August 26, 2010 at 5:34 pm

ya the main differences from S3 devices shall be the secondary hw part:

    CAMERA 8, 12mpx
    SCREEN 4, 3,5 3,2 INCH
    BUILT IN MASS MEMORY 8, 16 ,32GB…
    CONNECTIVITY: WIFI? GPS?
    QWERTY OR NOT?
    HDMI OUT

    and others like that..:)

for now N8 still the best fully accessoried..
..but E7 shall be later the best S3 offcourse!

    August 26, 2010 at 5:37 pm

“Symbian^3 and MeeGo will have certain minimum base level specification to ensure apps created on one device works in another.”

For sure, there will be some base HW, but we don’t know what it will be.

On other hand, the Broadcom in N8 is one of the most powerful GPUs out there and will be very big +++ for Nokia if they put it in cheaper Symbian devices…

  18. N#O#R#U#L#E#S
    August 26, 2010 at 5:59 pm

“numbers” talks about a great gpu for this broadcom but we need to see it in action yet…for now i saw asphalt on n8 and didn’t seems very smoothly……….i think power vr rest the best
