Nokia N8 pre-orders live in the US

Nokia USA has pulled the trigger and placed the Nokia N8 up for preorder on their site. It’s going for $549 with an availability at the end of September 😦 (so far away!). The only available colour is black unfortunately and unlike the 5800 preorders last time around, there are no coupons to drop the price.
For those who’d like to complain about the steep price, for the sake of perspective.

The N97 sold for $700 and the Nokia 5800 was 389 on pre-order so this price is definitely a healthy median of the two. We can probably expect the price to drop after release to around $450 which would be absolutely great. Looking forward to getting my hand on one of ’em and maybe posting a bit of a review too!

Hit the link if you live in the US and can’t wait to get your hands on the N8.

Sounds great! But I have a slightly unrelated question 🙂
Do you reckon the CP-402 sports armband lets the N8’s display work as the armband has some sort of plastic screen protector? I.e. do capacitive display work if they are covered by a layer or plastic? X6 anyone?

They CAN, it kinda depends on the plastic in use and how well it insulates the screen from the conductivity of your skin

Damn, when is this thing coming to Canada?! I’ll have to buy it from somewhere else if it’s not announced by September

      It was $700 lol, ridiculous.

it’s not ridiculous, is the right price for the flagship/hi-range phone of the last year (n97 600eur at the launch here…) n8 is not a flagship just middle range so price 500U$D is ok…flagship(so 700u$d and more) shall be first meego phone this year…

I can agree with the price. But, what’s the deal with only one color. People here in the US are very picky about how things look and choosing colors would’ve helped Nokia grab a greater share.

Let’s hope they add the remaining colors later on. 🙂 That being said I like black and blue the most and can’t wait to get my hand on one!

as far as i know, black is way easier to produce than other colors, i guess the smart phone growth is exceeding the production capacity everywhere for everyone, even for nokia.
the price is totally ok. i just want to see a review before pulling the trigger.

by the time September rolls around i have a feeling amazon and most online shops will be carrying them, and they will have them in all the colors.

Not worth buying it from Nokia directly, unless you really want to pay the sales tax (maybe that’s just NJ). Wait until Amazon gets it and spend a little less.

the black one look the best

if only we can be allowed to change the color of the bottom plasric parts to our favourite color to match the main phone body color, black + red ends combination

    Hmmm Sym,
Color preference is just subjective. But, it’s these little things that make NA users feel neglected or left out. If it really wants to get into the US market, it’s time Nokia stops the ‘wait-and-see’ tactic it has in terms of product release in the US. It also has to work with carriers, no matter how stupid it sounds to Europeans (and me), Americans think the price of the phone is what the carriers put on it, so Nokia has to deal with this stupidity with stupidity. Lol dumb it down for Americans Nokia. 😛

In Spain you can choose the color. But for 469€, I’m going to wait for a price drop.

I’m going to try and get my hands on a Made In Finland N8 the ones we get in North America are the Made In China ones; I don’t want to support Foxconn ‘The Suicide Factory’ the firm that puts together the Nokias in China

Its been documented that they beat their workers harass them, over work them and pay them pennies so much so that there has been 14 Suicides THIS YEAR ALONE as recent as last week!

On a more selfish note how well do you think they’ll be put together when the employees are being overworked (18hrs a day) and harassed and beaten that they’re in a drone like state of depression?

    • Stylinred
      August 17, 2010 at 2:41 am

And that Number doesn’t include Attempted Suicides which reportedly number in the 20s

Nokia, not like Apple, has its own 4 factories, at least one in China to my knowledge. If the phone is made in China, it is not necessary it is made by foxconn.

Nokia phones made in China are made by Foxconn though I doubt all of them are however some still are though Apple gives them more business than other companies.

That’s either not an N8 or a very early firmware, video quality on N8 is significantly better than that.

you should make a post about nokia X3 : http://conversations.nokia.com/2010/08/17/nokia-x3-touch-and-type-in-videos/

it’s preety nice for a low end device.

Wow! Looks MUCH better than the leaked picture!
I’d actually love to have that as my secondary device to accompany my N8 (when I buy it!)
It’s actually a great combination, looks really smooth to me! And all that fit into a 9.6mm device! That’s AMAZING!

Oh $ 549 $ which is nearly equall to d price of my frnds Moto Droid X..
    any suggestions???

    • Keith
      August 17, 2010 at 11:34 am

Droid X sucks IMO, especially in the camera department.
N8 is actually more powerful than droid x in terms of graphics.
It all comes down to personal choice.
Do u want a symbian^3 Device with THE BEST camera ever along with nifty features like USB OTG, HDMI out, Bluetooth 3.0, and such
      OR
Do you want an android device with a scent camera but a huge screen for web browsing and watching videos and android market which has over 100K apps.

I personally would go for the N8. Coz hardly any android phone has good features (especially camera) except for galaxy s devices which are really good. Besides, the price for this thing would come down to about $499 after it’s launch….

    n8 has good looks
the black one looks the best to me
will choose it over iphone4, if nokia makes e72 touch and type phone,i may consider buying it

      August 17, 2010 at 1:52 pm

I agree, E6 should be in the E72 format but be touch and type like this phone. That would be interesting…

So i decided to email the US Nokia Store and ask about the other Colours and when they’ll be up for pre-order or if they will

the response i got was the other colours will be up for pre-order “very soon”

just in case anyone wanted (my main question in emailing them was about the Made in Finland or China concern of mine and i couldnt get an answer to that)

    • alex68
      August 18, 2010 at 9:16 pm

En, I am afraid the Nokia factory in Finalnd doesn’t produce high volume products anymore…

To my knowledge, in China the suicide rate is very high especially in countryside. The workers at Foxconn are most from countryside. This is difficult to explain to you. I think some western media somehow has told one-side story that could mislead people in west.
