Nokia N8 hands-on (Updated)

the Delhi event for the Nokia N8, CJ from http://www.zomgitscj.com and Vaibhav Sharma from http://www.thehandheldblog.com managed to scoop a bit of hands-on time with the N8. It was their use and impressions based on having little to no prior experience with the device so the views are as raw as they get. Regardless it should give a decent insight into the speed and responsiveness of the phone & UI on the N8. They managed to record around 25 minutes of time with the device and part 1 is available  below. Part 2 should be up later so keep a look out for an update to this post.

Part 2 is now up, Thanks for the heads up Webby!

so far I like the N8. The only problem I see is that Avkon UI which was build for non touch devices. hope the move fast to S4 which will be build from the ground for touch devices.

barring one point where it took a whiled to render a screen it was a pretty responsive and fluid device

WHAT A COUPLE OF AMATEURS THEY WERE!

They really didn’t have much of a clue about anything did they? And these guys are supposed to write blogs – ha! I won’t be reading their blogs anytime soon.

I’m not quite sure what we’re supposed to get from this video other than seeing the UI is pretty quick on an unfinished N8, which we’ve seen many times before.

For an actual review, I’ll stick with people who know what they’re talking about and can make a fair, detailed, and in-depth assessment of the N8. E.g. people like AllAboutSymbian, or Jay or Andre (about the only two I’d trust) on this blog 🙂

This is without any doubt the WORST hands on video i have ever seen in my life, lossing focus all the time and that “talk talk talk” is… Oh my! And, worst of all, what are doing FOUR hands over the device???? WE cant see it that way!

It’d be better had one operated the camera and one doing the hands on but I think that the impromptu nature of the hands on wasn’t as much a hindrance as you’d make it out to be.

      Oh my! :
This is without any doubt the WORST hands on video..

Be cool, don’t be a hater.

To me the N8 looks actually very nice and silky smooth. If only the browser was ready for launch..

WARNING take a look to the signal level bar on that N8 is very low (1 bar) or totally absent(0 bars)…maybe antenna issue on n8 as n97mini/iphone 4????

    • Andre
      August 13, 2010 at 1:31 am

Or maybe they were in a bad service area?
The antenna is located at the bottom of the handset point to an area unlikely to be covered by users. It’s fine

      No Nokia has antenna’s problem.

Do you know why IPHONE 4 has antenna’s problem? Because Apple does not want to pay Nokia for inner antenna patent. Apple on the hook of Nokia’s 3 G patent infringement more than 1B value. On the other hand, Apple has sued many small firms to protect its products. That’s why I never like Apple and never buy anything from Apple, no wonder whatever supper crap!

glad to see the n8 responsive. The speed of the N8 in that vdo must have bought smiles to many symbian users.
The only thing i hated was the contacts search via alphabet options… it’s too slow for actual usage and you have to keep your eyes scanning the screen for the next alphabet. A portrait qwerty or t9 bar would have been better.

I assure you it is not like that as you thought. When you quickly browse the long contact list, it will pop up the first letter of family name on the flt to remind you where you are now. When search for a certain people and you enter the search string, it will pop up the choices on the fly already.

These functionalities are the ones of those many small surprises I mentioned earlier.

N8 is really way much more user friendly than all other phones. Believe me!

I just checked the search function again. It is really good. It supports name search. The keyboard narrows down the possible string input while it offers the matching results on the fly.

For dialer, when you enter a number or a string, it prompts the list of names that match the number or the string on the fly as well.

      by t9 i assume u mean a “smart search” option…
and im glad to tell u that there is one! u can access it when u start dialing a phone number, u can also start typing a name.
just like sony ericssons “dumb” phones, if u had a chance to use one from the past year or two.

    looks good

i skipped through some of it so i dont know if it had any problems with lag etc
but from what i saw everything looked smooth

the 1 speaker on the back does seem kind of like a 😦 i really enjoyed how oh the n95 had one on each side of the device

but i doubt i will ever use it without headphones or connected to a BT device anyhow
