Nokia N8 – timing, price, upgrade, where it will be sold

According to a blog post by Eldar Murtazin, the Nokia N8 timing, price, and other info are apparently as below:

  • Price: 420GBP (iPhone 3Gs on play at 599GBP)
  • Release: Late September (September 25) – hmm, what about those August 25th rumours? Apparently due to revision of the cost, as told by Nokia PR director back in may
  • Asian markets will get free stylus. Russian markets apparently have a free silicone case. Eldar says N8 looks much better without the case. Seriously though, what manufacturer of phones that makes a beautiful aluminium handset puts a coloured casing to hide it huh?
  • Further changes into N8 firmware, with DivX being installed (hence why DivX probably wasn’t confirmed/denied during launch interviews, only in later posts from NokConv)
  • New firmware (to be flashed mid August). Stability improves significantly week on week, but still with some niggles (perhaps right now, not the final sales piece?)
  • New browser supposed to be coming Sept, but now Oct (Rafe has always said new browser was coming Oct, no?) N8 first to have new browser – will it be MicroB grade?
  • Hardware changes final

pricing seems confusing , this post says 420GBP which is almost 505 euro , but on the russian site it says 460-475 euro.

August would be great to get people thinking that maybe Nokia’s up to the game again. Then the public might feel that Nokia is relevant again come Christmas time. If the launch would’ve been August, we’re seeing far too little press and advertising going on to support the launch. If it came out now, I think I would totally miss the day! How many people missed the launch of iP4?

September feels good as well, though, because like Murtazin’s post said, the N8 is getting weekly software updates. The N8 simply cannot fail in terms of it feeling like a finished product. People are more than eager to call the N8 another N97 given the slightest reason I’m sure.

September is ok I guess, because a lot of people are in holidays in august . And it will be better to improve the speed. I hope the meego device will be launched before Christmas , but I think a really great device will come in Q1 2011 when meego 1.2 will be finished, and A9 CPU will be available.

thanks for the news again. it sounds promising. being late is better than being bad. Eldar is saying good things about N8 now… wow, hope that the Russians were good to him, lol

    looking forward to the phone!

I´m really looking forward to get this thing. Im holding back my money since the first pictures leaked. I’m just not sure about one thing: in the early days of announcements, there has been rumoured a version of N8 with 32GB Flash-RAM. I would bite my own ass if I buy the ‘normal’ N8 with 16GB and maybe 4 weeks later the 32GB-Version would come out. Does anybody remember the pictures of the blue package with ‘N8-00 / 32GB’ on it and maybe know something more about it ?

I think Eldar said it’d come out somewhere in Q1 2011, but there is a 32GB model in the works for sure.

I just cant wait to get a decent Nokia, after the the likes of N96 and N97. N97 mini is OK, but not good enough.

I have the E72 but would like to have a new media phone.

How can anyone trust an Eldar blog given his Nokia hate? The man’s a liar and an idiot. Yes, really.

Also if the DivX thing is true, it’s because of the outcry for it across multiple blogs, for which i take part credit 🙂

    D.O.A

The US blogs and Eldar have killed it, maybe not in the public eyes because thsy will buy anything they are told to, but in the eyes of developers, followers (symbian Guru) and even Nokia (now talking more about S^4).

Sad to say, but it wont clean that nasty taste about Nokia going around the internet and financial world. I’m holding out till Meego and S^4.

Sorry to be a naysayer here. Still holding on tight to my N900 and 5800.

      @Dave

I don’t think it makes a difference to devleopers, unlike the old days, now you develop ONCE. Not S60 3rd, FP1, FP2 or 5th editions, just QT and make whatever you want. I have been playing with QT and being able to just choose your targets without code change is great! Maemo, Meego and S^3, S^4 etc.

With regards to the phone? It is like anything in Tech, should I NOT buy a PC as I already know the Intel roadmap, I know that the next gen of CPUs are coming out and all the good things it brings. Once those CPUs are out the next road map will out already, should then just wait again and NOT buy? Every 6 months something new is there!

I understand your sentiment, and agree with you completely! If we always waited for the next phone/CPU/car to come out, we’d never buy anything. I’ve decided I will buy the N8 when it is released.

I’m just hoping for dear life that Nokia and Symbian developers start pushing out QT apps like crazy. I’m really impressed from what I’ve seen people do with QT, especially when it comes to UI design.

Hopefully the new versions of Qt include things like a media playback API or something. That’s definitely something that devs are going to use a lot.

        http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2010/05/06/qt-47-scope-change-regarding-qt-multimedia/

Qt 4.7 is in beta 2 stage and probably will release the final version in august and N8 will come packed with qt 4.7 which is more adapted for mobile phones. I think this is one of the reasons N8 might be delayed.

Would make a great deal of sense to do that as opposed to releasing it then having to do a FW update weeks after.

n8 finally seems generally a good phone by nokia but i think battery capacity (1200) is not enough, and its gpu power is to verify i see asphalt 5 on n8 and it doesn’t runs smoothly instead on samusung wave it runs really faster damn!!

    • GordonH
      August 2, 2010 at 2:51 am

Agreed….My friend bought a samsung wave , says that it’s far from perfect but his Wave runs super fast with decent battery life, .. The N8 or C7 might not be as fast but I hope it’s fast enough.

Chances are, the OpenGL extensions and optimisations weren’t done at the time that “demo” came out.
      Two reasons for thinking that,
Non-final hardware and quite early firmware.
Don’t write something off if you’ve yet to see the finished article.

Does the Symbian^3 OS support categories?

No phone OS can be considered “smart” if tasks, calendar items, contacts, data files. . . if none of these things can be tagged with one or more category. If you cannot sync categories to desktop and web-based organizers, it’s just not “smart.” If you cannot create views of data which filters by category, it’s one stupid phone.

This ain’t rocket science; the Palm OS did it, a dozen years ago and more.

So, does Symbian^3 know sh*t about categories?

Yeah, it takes pretty photos. . .

Are you here to troll or ask questions?
It syncs just fine to any desktop organizer that uses Caldav.
It supports multiple calendars and calendar items can be of multiple types,
      to-do lists, birthdays etc.
Concerning filtering by data type, the universal search allows you to search a myriad of items including but not limited to mail, sms and calendar. Whether or not being able to few this things at a glance or with a single tap is not known at this time. Not like anyone’s been able to review the thing and all.
      Thanks for your comment nonetheless.
