Nokia N8 DivX playback natively and Gorilla Glass confirmed?

Apparently, Damien Dinning has confirmed at Nokia Conversations (in reply to a question) that the Nokia N8 will have the elusive DivX playback capability (once confirmed before then immediately retracted – though other users have claimed their N8s played DivX natively). Thanks for the heads up again, eagle eyed mrbean aka Marc.

Unless that’s someone pretending to be Damien, well that’s awesome!

DivX playback out of the box means your whole home entertainment with a cinema in your pocket is complete. Compress your old videos or just port your DivX collection over to the N8 and playback over HDMI. Apparently for files the N8 does not recognize, windows media player (or some sort of player) will convert files before transferring to the Nokia N8 (though was this in .mkv?)

Damien has also indirectly confirmed Gorilla Glass before in answering Steve Litchfield’s questions during their interview, though at the time, some argued Damien was agreeing to “scratch resistant glass” rather than actual “Gorilla Glass”.

Well, Damian is only incharge of the camera portion of the N8. Doubt he would know if the N8 does supports Divx playback. Besides, he said ‘should’ XD.

People that have “used” the phone have said that it runs most of em just fine but if you’re using windows 7 and attempt to copy the videos over it will ask to convert them if the video is incompatible

      > Well, Damian is only incharge of the camera portion of the N8. Doubt he would know if the N8 does supports Divx playback

Sorry, but that’s just incorrect. The man’s one of the most senior people on the N8 team, he’s been heavily involved with the N8 from the outset, his work very much involves playback and display issues too and not only that but he’s been continually testing N8 from the very first. Just because he didn’t write the code for DivX playback, doesn’t mean he won’t know. That’s not at all how these things work.

If Damien says there is DivX playback, you can be 110% sure that it will.

Will nokia upgrade their realplayer which is popular in asia because many tv drama series downloaded from internet is in rmvb format. I have been waiting for so long for just a capable rmvb player:)

i didn’t need for a confirmation i already knew from the begining that n8 support divx/xvid just read the official spec:

MPEG4-ASP(ADVANCED SIMPLE PROFILE) MEAN SUPPORT FOR DIVX AND DIVX OUT OF THE BOX!!!!!

N97/5800 INSTEAD SUPPORT ONLY MPEG4-SP(SIMPLE PROFILE) THAT MEAN NO DIVX SUPPORT…

Yes mate that’s all very well, but the issue is the container – many DivX’s are in a .avi container, so the codec might be supported but if the container’s wrong it won’t play. THAT’S why this confirmation was all important, and why we didn’t know for sure beforehand.

I wish he would have answered the questions regarding whether the N8 would be updated to Symbian^4. His silence on the matter is making me think it won’t. It’s a deal-breaker for me and I’m getting awfully close to ordering a Galaxy S despite having had bad experiences with Samsung mobiles in the past.
Meego is taking a bit too long for me, and I will probably end up getting a Meego phone when true Meego 1.2/2.0 is released next year.
