Pics: Nokia N8 AMOLED vs Samsung Galaxy S Super AMOLED

TestMobile compares the Nokia N8’s AMOLED with the Samsung Galaxy S’ eye melting Super AMOLED. Though of course the camera could increase/decrease the differences (adjusting to brightness of one screen, affecting look of another), disregarding this, in the photo below you can see that the deep blacks and brighter whites in the Super AMOLED display.  I’ve seen both, but only individually so I can’t comment on comparisons, but both look fantastic.

Not to fear though as the N8’s AMOLED is not just a step above regular TFT LCD displays (see 5800 comparison) but is apparently head and shoulders above some current AMOLED displays (Eldar has mentioned N8’s display is superior to the Nexus one.) And apparently Samsung’s Super AMOLED will be exclusive to their own devices for a while – I don’t recall where I read that though, so perhaps unless you want a Samsung, we’ll all have to settle for great AMOLEDs

In AMOLED vs TFT LCD, AMOLED displays are brighter, have higher contrast, richer more vibrant colours and consume less energy.

In AMOLED displays, each pixel controls its own brightness, as opposed to having a unified backlight in TFT, so blacks can be well, blacker and whites can be whiter and the colours are richer and more vibrant. Plus by not needing a backlight, they can utilise less power.

Here’s the HTC Google Nexus One AMOLED vs Super AMOLED on the Wave (on top) VIA Mobile-Review.

The differences are much more obvious here, the Samsung is bursting with brilliance.

Comparison shot between the Nokia displays by All About Symbian. Apparently N8’s AMOLED is much better at outdoor visibility than N86/N85 which suffered from vampiric screens.

Samsung’s own explanation of Super AMOLED

Cheers for the heads up mark/mrbean

I agree, Ive recently got an Galaxy S and was extremely surprised at how good the screen was, outdoor viewing seems to be better then my old N95 and E71 with transflective displays,

depends how they agree with samsung cause the superamoled technology is patented by samsung, and I think they want to keep that advantage .

What the folks at nokia research center are doing? Have not seen a breakthrough technology from them since years ago:(

    off topic

do you think meego os need physical buttons on the front to be operated like the android? Or does not need any like the n900?

The home button is at the top left corner of every apps or games? Is there menu at the top bar? Is back button is at the top right corner?

Nokia are targeting Meego devices as a step above Smartphones so the phone functions will not be the most important feature so I am guessing they will have one button or nothing at all as they insist that Meego devices are Multimedia computers with phone functions built in

Physical button are nicer to press than touch, but they don’t work too well in landscape mode (they stay in the same place). Android is nice but most it’s UI doesn’t work in landscape mode. The home-screen and app launcher only has portrait mode. In Meego and S^4, the entire UI is supposed to work in landscape and portrait mode.

can nokia keep the gsm umts wifi patents, do not want to license it to apple if apple is found guilty

then nokia can continue doing small improvement to smartphone each year?

Galaxy s surely wins as of super amoled display.
1 ghz humming bird processor(Now the fastest in smartphone) & 512MB RAM.
ANDROID OS with more than 20K applications.

N8 just has a good camera and on all other things it sucks like slow prossesor, low RAM,Symbian with less no of applications. In my opinion if you are going to buy it then you are most idiot person on this planet. This phone is only for showoff but not for useability

samsung also did an amazing job with integration – packing 1500mah (?) into a tardis-like case

nokia seems to be content with 1250mAh batteries, which is just horrible for the new class of phones.

Having used modern smartphones as my primary device, I need 2500mAh and more to get through a whole day.
