Video: MeeGo on Nokia N900 (Slide/Swipe for multilanguage keyboard)

A couple of new N900 MeeGo videos, the first by BestBoyZde, the second from InoHacker.

  • From 2:42 we see the lock screen. This is quite different in that you move the lock button from its original location into the wallpaper.
  • 3:40 – SMS, contacts are picked up, new on screen keyboard pops up. Now this is really cool in that swiping it changes the keyboard orientation for different languages. No more having to go through options. Nice touch. I hope there’s more gesture based actions that prevents the need for menu digging.
  • Firefox mobile (fennec) browser (also seen in second video) still pre-alpha stuff, causing N900 to crash
  • I wish the quick shortcut bar at the bottom had more than 4 app icons. When in portrait, it could just scroll.

Shorter, slightly clearer vid.

nice. but do you know if we’ll have the possibility to add widgets to the desktop? also if there will be multiple screens? I didn’t find any info about this.

@Jim i believe nokia will add mutiple screen & widget to their MeeGo phones just like N900.

by the way i don’t like the 4-favorite-app bar. It copys iPhone and looks ugly. REMOVE IT!

Moreover, blue arrow icon should launch a mutitasking page when it’s pressed for a long seconds.

        agree with what you said

bottom bar should be removed to save more screen real estate, they should implement something like the tablet ui to launh the simple mode!

if nokia think it is necessary, the reason for it is they want to let their users to put their favourite and most used app icons in the bottom bar to do the things like making call, sms, etc.
my suggestion is to make one widget fix for this purpose

how do we suggest to nokia, and explain why it is more better than the current implementation?

please somebody take some action about it.

You can make suggestions at http://bugs.meego.com/ (not nokia exactly but nokia people read them)

the bar is ok, because if I want to call someone I don’t want to make hundreds of click on the screen, but they should make something like show/hide menu bar option.

for suggestions use http://bugs.meego.com/ but if you submit you also need to argue why do you prefer your way over the current way. Just because you like it more doesn’t count.

remember to attach some drawing to support your ideas, this way they can understand your idea more clearly and easily

the pearandbanana ui guideline has stated that

you can flick vertically in open app view to access to widget space!

This all looks beta and the finish release version should be good. Nothing is copying the iphone from what I can see.

I have high hopes for MeeGo. Right now I’m taking an Android detour with a Nexus One but I will return to Nokia if they can get MeeGo right. I don’t see any ianything in the video either. That’s a good thing!

meego is made for both mass market and geeks, not just only for geeks, i find the maemo5 ui a bit confused, so would the mass market

the bottom bar is necessary, they just need to make the bar thinner and smaller to save space for widgets! They need to reduce the height of bottom bat by 35%

    have some more ideas

    1. Remove the bottom bar- will make meego unique and save more screen space for widgets space, but hundred of click to make call and sms

    2. Keep the bottom bar- easy for many of the people for making call and sms.
In portrait mode, they need to make the icons size as small as possible to make as many icons as possiible

in landscape mode, they need to make the bottom icons wider to cover all the remaining empty space of the bottom bar

no, hide/show can make people confused,

the above are the best solutions i can think of now

    make the bottom bar thinner
make its content scrollable, hence full of icon when in landscape mode and portrait
make its icons look more like butto, hence less iphonish
