Video: Hands on with the Leaked Nokia N9/N8-QWERTY variant/E7 (RM-626)

As promised by NegriElectronics here’s some more dishy news on what they call the Nokia N9.

Note, Eldar has said that this is an old proto. There may already have been changes to what he’s already got.

  • Name yet not confirmed. But this is NOT the N9 as that will have MeeGo. This is Symbian^3.
  • Slim looking QWERTY
  • HDMI
  • Screen looking bigger than 3.5″ or is that just me being hopeful?
  • Screen looks to be AMOLED
  • Rotate transition is slightly more acceptable. A very fast fade in fade out that does not fade to black (to make it look like it’s frozen)
  • Can’t be nHD – The small print of the text looks too sharp. WVGA at least? (not accounting for exact ratio here)
  • Solid sounding snap as the keyboard pops open. (I do love N97 form factor and that slide!). And it does flick and pop open (not a passive push)
  • Back end has a small bar (it doesnt run all the way along the length of the device like the N97.)
  • Check out the new volume switch/rocker thing next to the SIM port.

Recorded today. What's with that front-facing-looking LED flash?

It may just be the angle but it's looking pretty slim here. And the screen looks bigger than 3.5" though it may just be wishful thinking.

The curved thing in the corner is the tip of his thumb. The text is much too sharp to be 640x360

back lit 4-row QWERTY with a solid sounding snap as it slides open.

Back. Slightly different to N97 with only a partial hinge.

SIM card port and look at that new volume rocker switch. No single button, you slide the volume/zoom either way.

Was JUST about to send this to you Jay, quick as ever though.
    Just a few comments,
    It’s damn thin! :-O
The screen has to be above 3.7″ and at that size I’d think 640*360 would look pixelated. The software’s a lot further on that I would think given that the firmware info said april 😐
    Browser still sucks
The keyboard is a beauty and it looks to be an OLED screen.
Maemo on this thing would have been a match made in heaven.

Ah thanks Andre – appreciate the tip anyway. I would have missed it had I not bookmarked and pressed it by accident instead of messaging. haha.

Screen size and resolution does seem larger though I hope it’s not wishful thinking influencing perception.

Browser does indeed still suck and will look to continue SUCKING Maemo balls until it gets the new update. But even then, MicroB would probably still maul it.

MicroB is very unique and special and chock full of awesome sauce.
It’s not just you with regards to the increased size and resolution, a lot of people are noting it. I trawl forums looking for info on any nokia devices so I was bound to come across it 🙂

        • June 29, 2010 at 12:16 am

Yup. With MicroB I really do have the real Web in my hands. It’s sort of comforting to know I don’t need to be at a laptop to get to certain sites. Uni email is very temperamental and can’t be accessed by safari/opera/other browsers except i.e. and mozilla based. Plus whole host of other sites.

          – As for foruming – do you blog also? If not, you should. 🙂 Like here :p

Would love to have more people to bounce discussion of mobile off of though 🙂

nice find. This does not look like N8 variant, must be the N9. The question is: where is the software!?

    • June 29, 2010 at 12:23 am

It looks like the N8 so it’s some form of variant. Whether it will keep that moniker is another thing.

As for “where is the software”, not sure what you mean.

Oh Tomorrow (Wednesday) MeeGo UX is supposed to be released. We’ll see what Mobile MeeGo looks like. Hope it’s as stunning as the tablet pre alpha.

Almost forgot about the MeeGo thing being tomorrow!
        Giddy to see what’s coming.
Wouldn’t it be insane if the hardware in that video was running Symbian just to test the hardware (don’t shatter my dream)

        • June 29, 2010 at 12:29 am

I’m kinda hoping this ISN’T meego phone.

I want xenon, I want bigger surprise with the design. Also it’s got be to be awesome inside and it’s kinda hiccuping at the browser (though it’s the symbian shitty browser – used to be awesome but never kept up)

          – meh, will probably miss tomorrow though as am away. Dead excited to see what’s in store for MeeGo mobile.

I’ll def be following the meego news tomorrow.
I’m hoping for a big suprise with regards to meego as well.

I think the screen is at least 4 inch, which is a lot bigger than N8. It is obiviously a step up. Also, I wonder if you noticed that the edge around the screen is very marginal to maximize the screen size. It looks to me a better hardware all around. If it is built with plastic, it is E7, otherwise N9 it is.
We know that the N9 proto has been already in early tester’s hands for a few weeks. This might be the real deal, but I serious hope this is just E7.
N9: Meego + A8 1 GHz + 4 inch screen + everything N8 has including the camera. It is the ultimate phone.

S^3? Nokia has already come out and said N8 will be the only N-series running S^3, so…..?

    • June 29, 2010 at 12:18 am

Perhaps then S^4? S^4 was supposed to be pushed early to Q4 (not sure about handset availability)

But if it’s Eseries it could still be S^3

the back of this nokia n8 clearly shows the marking C0.00 so this could be the n9 once it has the aluminium casing…. orange n8 here http://www.finestfones.com/2010/05/nokia-n8-is-writing-on-wall.html

Eldar said on Twitter its NOT the N9 its still going to be leaked. He also said in terms of names its between the N8-01 and the C7.
To be honest I don’t care about the name of this phone its SWEET, its thin looks to have a bigger screen
Shame about the 8 Megapixel camera and LED flash especially considering the other N8 has 12 Meg’s and xenon flash
Shows that hardware for the N900 successor will be amazing and thinner than the N900 which is promising and exciting 🙂
