Nokia N8 Second Look by Eldar Murtazin

Say what you like about Eldar Murtazin, but one thing is for sure this guy does give some insightful info into the mobile phone space especially a lot about Nokia considering his growing reputation of being a ‘Nokia hater’. His Symbain 3 review was thoroughly reviewed for someone that is called a Nokia hater but if you read it it gives some harsh truths about the state of the UI on Symbian devices. You can read this and some of my thoughts here.

But after the Symbian 3 review he also posted another article which you can read here with some very interesting news from Nokia and some interesting snippets about future N8’s……..

Some of the main points in the article:

  • There will be more models of the N8 like N8-01, N8-02, N8-03 (I thought the new numbering system was supposed to be easier !!!)
  • There will be a 32 GB version of the N8 and some sort of music service in certain countries ( I am guessing ‘Comes with music’) will retail about 425-450 EUR and be announced during Nokia world in september
  • There will be a ‘cheap’ version of the N8 WITHOUT a 12 megapixel camera and less memory retail about 230-250 EUR (talk about cheap)
  • There will be a senior version of the N8 with and qwerty keyboard resembling the n97 but there will be camera with less megapixels, but this phone which a render was leaked could also be the first Symbian 4 phone
  • He does advice people that want a keyboard that they should wait for the N8 with qwerty keyboard coming soon apparently
  • N8 is a replacement for the Nokia 5800 (HARSH!!!) or people who haven’t had experiences with other OS’s (another shot to the Nokia fans)
  • AMOLED on the N8 is superior to the Google Nexus One
  • Nokia is not able to create screens as good as Apple or Samsung (SAMSUNG !!!!! whats his beef with Nokia and Samsung)
  • The N8 will have ‘Memory full’ problems like N97 due to the low amount of RAM (REALLYYY!!!)
  • Battery management is great and he even praises Nokia engineers for that
  • Average usage is 2 days when fully charged (not bad )
  • Fastest Symbian phone to date
  • Software not as good as iPhone 3GS let alone the iPhone 4, even BADA phones are faster (BADA FASTER REALLYYY !!!)
  • Samsung Wave is the benchmark for the N8 (REALLYYY !!!)
  • Nokia N9 offers totally new interface (YEEESSS!!!) borrowed features from Android (will take that)
  • Meego will look comparable to BADA OS and will look like current modern OS ‘s currently on the market like (iOS, Android, WebOS etc) (he’s definitely has seen the N9 and is defiantly good news)
  • N8 is decent but unremarkable
  • Goal of the N8 is to keep sales of phones comparable to competitors
  • Excitement will fade after a few months as nokia will offer technologically more advanced devices (YEEESSS !!!)
  • The N8 is not an all-in-one phone like the Nokia N95 was (REALLYYY !!!)

Part of me thinks the N8 is is just another beta device like the Nokia N900 especially the since the news that the N8 will be the last Symbian device.

Unfortunately I think I will not be buying the N8 based on some of Eldar’s comments but also because of the Meego news which I think has a far better future than Symbian. Although the situation could change

Eldar does seem to make some good point’s about Symbian being unexciting, but he keeps on comparing it to Samsung devices in particular BADA the last time I read something on BADA, Engadget was making fun of it.

One thing is for sure that I will have to get my hands on a BADA device and compare it to Symbian.

Let me know what you think in the comments and you can also follow me on twitter @jwf90 and tweet comments

well it doesn’t need Eldar to tell us what was already obvious. I mean why would nokia start building maemo/meego if not for their high end device.
A lot of people think that nokia is stupid because is staying with symbian. symbian just needed to be re-polished. it just needed to be more adapted to touch screen devices. S^4 will be more eye candy.
they didn’t complicated to much ( only 3 screens) because they want it to be deployed on lower devices. symbian from the start was not meant to compete with android, ios and others. the fact that they release this is more to start creating some ecosystem (qt) so when meego will come to market , developers will simply port their apps designed for s^3 to meego.

meego on the other hand has a lot more future. it is supported by more companies ( at least in the netbook, tablet and probably phone too) , and it’s linux based. so they will start with a large database of applications designed for desktop linux that can be ported on meego( they’ll probably need to change the UI cause it will look like hell on the small phone screen)

so.. symbian will not die. it will be seen as a more simple os , for people who are more interested in long battery life and just to make phone calls, but still have the option to browse web pages, check email, use facebook ,twitter , GPS

they need to modernize the symbian because today smartphones will be seen as future feature phones, while meego will be used on high end phones , for people who need powerful phones.

Well put and exactly in line with recent Nokia statements. The N8 was never planned to be the Nokia Flagship, which will soon be a MEEGO device. I also think the statement from Eldar about the N8 being a 5800XM is somewhat misguided. The X6 is that device and the X series will continue to meet this consumer market. The N8 is a super camera phone. As for Symbian^4…it is meant to compete head on with both Android and IOS. MEEGO is meant to trump all in the mobile computer market. Symbian^3 has mass market scaleability and will box IOS and Android from below as MEEGO boxes these other platforms from above. Symbian^4 will then abruptly encroach on IOS and Android. Qt is the great scaler in all of this…allowing Nokia and an army or programmers to more efficiently creat apps across a very deep product portfolio. Now it is only on Nokia to execute a well thought out strategy.

well it supposed to be N9 which we already know it will be released in q4 this year. probably at the end of November , beginning of December to capture the Christmas sells fever.
Seriously Eldar didn’t bring any news. he just pointed what was obvious and we already know.

Well after reading about the Meego UI in the meego wiki (it was later taken of), it seems quite similar to the UI of symbian 4 (shown in concept videos and sketches). And since the primary development environment is now QT for both symbian and Meego, most of the software should run on both platforms. I guess the main difference will be that Meego devices will have higher spec hardware.

So, with Symbian 4 and Meego being very similar in terms of UI and apps, it seems Nokia is just hedging their bets across 2 platforms. Also Meego will be used in many other devices (tablets, netbooks, car consoles, ..etc), while Symbian is only planned for phones.

It’s become uncool to say symbian has an excellent UI. Get over it Eldar …. each OS has a different UI. It’s a matter of getting used …. during the 5800 days, it did get most things done faster then the Iphone 3g. And people stated it was “just” a snappier OS. Now their all conclude repeatedly that the N8 is slower. It’s half the price of the ihip 4!!!
People usually have established perspectives(buried really deep in their brains) before giving out their logic to the world.
Remember the days US Ipod users would state that their razrs and mp3 players are the most reasonable match. “Hey dude the phones should be used for making calls”.

Then US iphone 1 users said” who needs apps, widgets were all you needed”. When Iphone 1 started supporting apps then the US said “who needs 3g, apps,UI and are the only thing that’s important”,so what if later 5800 had a snappier UI,better camera, a better resolution, awesome battery life.
Then the Iphone 3gs became speedier, the US users/media said “the resolution, camera and multitasking, is good but not important, safari the best and we shouldn’t be downloading browsers”. The 5800 still had a better resolution, mulitasking, camera, snappier GPS and better 3rd party browser.
Now the Iphone 4, so US users and media are saying”abookie ablah ablah abook” …. it’s like deja vu but different
    sorry for the rant

MeeGo is the future. Symbian’s not the future. It will be moved to low or middle market.

However, every company are now having fun with high-end market and ignoring the low-priced phones. Android sucks in cheap phone. It’s a chance for Symbian to gain that market share. Finally Symbian will still gain the highest market share of the smart phone OS. ^_^

      quotes from link:
”Nokia’s next flagship smartphone, the N8, will be the last N-series phone running Symbian software.”The confirmation that MeeGo will be used for the next flagship Nseries device shows Nokia is betting the ranch on this platform to beat high-end rivals such as Apple’s iPhone”

Is anyone notice, there are lot of differents between Eldar’s first preview of N8 and second preview.
In first preview he says N8 is even slow compare to Vivaz and Now he is saying N8 is fastest symbian device and only little slow compare to Wave and other Android devices.
In first preview he also give harsh comment that the Amoled used on N8 is same as Nexus one and blame nokia to use cheap display on N8. And Now he is saying the Amoled on N8 is better than Nexus one.

What is this?? Sorry but he is making himself a ‘Big Joke’.

    • June 25, 2010 at 12:09 pm

This is what happens when you “preview/maul” an extremely early PROTO like as if it’s the final production grade hardware/software.

It’s like shouting at a Michelin Star Chef for a disgusting dish when he’s only in the middle of chopping the ingredients. Obviously, it’s not yet finished, and should be judged when all has come together as the Chef (or Nokia) intended 🙂

N8 is like a good stew – it needs its time to simmer and improve (now just on software). Wait longer and it’s really good. (Though wait too long and it’s meh. We’ve gone and got take out)

Well the prospect of a QWERTY keyboard is always great news for me, but Symbian^3 or ^4 or ^10 simply will not cut it for me. MeeGo all the way baby!

This is excellent work. Any chance of this becoming available in English? Its a good and balanced piece, that connects a better conclusion to the actual content.

Eldar is a Bada (samsungs) OS pay roll, i think..
many of the Bada users mentioned that Bada is not a SmartPhone OS, Samsung simply altered SE’s old A-200, utterly copied Iphonic icons with Android OS + Touch wiz [the crap ass] and named as a BADA..
The only thing worried me about symbian is thier similiar UI. even low end phone 5233 gets the same UI things as of my N97 mini’s then whats worth for my penny??
    Answer me nokia :-\

Thats a really good point and have always wondered that myself about the similar UI from the 5233 to the N97, I guess Nokia wants it make it easier for customers upgrading by giving them a similar Ui or they are just plain lazy.
