WOW…..poor Nokia

I was reading Rafe’s article from the All about Symbian blog on Nokia’s revised outlook for the year and found this link from one of the comments of that post and lead me to this and thought WOW just WOW.

Nokia got slated by boingboing and its readers for releasing the X5, now in my opinion its a good looking neat phone, its basically a Nokia e72 !!! which makes me slightly mad cause I own a e72 and only recently got it.

Shows that people in America seriously don’t know Nokia that much and what gets me really mad is that 99.9% of the comments come from people that have never touched a Nokia device before.

Do you know what, Nokia reminds me of the person that works really hard but never gets the recognition whatever they do. Sometimes you cannot always expect recognition form everyone even though you have worked hard thats why it is so important to stick to people that believe in you, maybe thats why Nokia likes to stick to Europe.

    Yeah I read that too. I was going to comment at to point out

    – X5 is not running Symbian^3
    – X5 is not 450 USD!

    How brain dead must they have been to publish without checking?
    It’s like they poise the X5 as Nokia’s answer to the high end and slate it for costing so much, for looking like that etc when that is NOT the target market of the X5.

    It’s like the have those horse blinkers on their head with their narrow vision of the world.

      Yeah I was scratching my head there as well, but I am thinking that they are being sarcastic there, but then again this is America we are talking here, they do sometimes talk utter rubbish. What annoys me though when a phone is clearly not aimed at the geek market (except) iPhone the haters come in full force, and when a phone is aimed at the geek market (n900) they moan that its hard to use. Geeks ey we will never be able to understand them properley

    1 in 3 Americans couldn’t find their own country on a map. 😉

    Part of Nokia’s US problem is that they are dwarfed in exposure by Apple,Motorola etc. Most of the high end phones(N97,N900) are not carrier subsidized. I have used Nokia phones for 18 years but I have to seek them out. They have been lacking in a Iphone and Android super phone. I use the N900 but it is not the most user friendly phone for apps etc. Also, announcing a new phone and having it available 3 to 9 months later is maddening. By the time the N8 comes out, there will be 10 or more new phones released. please stop that Nokia.

      Totally agree.

      Lack of carrier subsidy, lack of CMDA phones (Nokia is GSM king), lack of superphone, and lack of immediate release once announced (and gained hype).

      US is a tough nut to crack. What works outside US will not work within for Nokia. They must release themselves from the image of pay as you go disposable handsets on one network.

      In contrast to this article, the ignorance of Nokia is not entirely bias of the American public but Nokia’s strategies in dealing with US market.

    I love Nokia and all but I almost fell off my chair laughing when I saw that screen shot. Treo killer??? The Treo is already dead.

    Americans understand soccer. We just like our football and baseball more. Nokia is everywhere in Europe but hardly advertises in the US. I guess 300,000,000+ people is not enough to make themselves more well known. I prefer Nokia phones but their approach to marketing here is mind boggling.

      Americans do NOT understand soccer. Its called football, since you play it with you feet. Your version is known as American Football, because apparently your feet are attached to your arms. US sports have franchises that move from city to city. That alone makes it impossible for Americans to understand football.

    This sort of thing seems to be a regular occurrence. I do wonder what is so difficult to grasp about Nokia being a global company. The X5 is for emerging markets where cost is the single biggest issue. These devices will often be a persons primary computer – pause and think about what that actually means – and the impact it might have n your life. The possibilities for social change are much greater. To sneer at this is frankly a bit short sighted.

    I suspect part of the problem is that because Nokia has something of a high end portfolio gap at the moment its easy to look elsewhere in its portfolio and criticise. Accurate reporting would help too in this particular instance. Nokia do need to get into the US market, but I suspect it is going to have to wait for the MeeGo devices to have a realistic chance.

    A couple of points from post and above comments…

    I find apps really easy on the N900 except for the fact that doing an update does not notify you of new ones and most of them are not on a web store but sites like this make me aware of the ones worth having.

    Bout nokia being the guy that works really hard and gets no recognition… There are massive gaps in its skillset such as customer support (and any kind of nokia support for the N900 whatsoever).

    Nokia has been such a non-factor for so long in the USA that launching the X5 is too little, too late.

    1. No “Comes with Music” in the USA.
    2. Opened flagship stores in Chicago and NYC and closed them both.
    3. A trickle of carrier-supported phones over the last five years.
    4. Almost non-existent customer service in the USA (important when you’re selling phones that aren’t carrier-supported).
    5. Never marketed the superiority of its cameraphones in the USA (almost no one has ever recognized my N80, N95, N82, N86 8MP, etc. except for people who have lived outside the USA).
    6. Never marketed that Nokia phones are open to third party apps in the USA.
    7. Never marketed that Nokia phones support MP3 ringtones that users could create form their own music without having to pay again for music they already own.
    8. Reneged on its n-Gage promises and left consumers with games that won’t play on updated/upgraded/replaced Nokia phones (another customer service failure).

    USA carriers clearly don’t need Nokia, and I don’t know if it will ever make sense for Nokia to try and buy their way in (I suspect not). I’ve been using Nokia phones *exclusively* now for the past 6 years, but that will most likely come to an end soon.

    Nokia needs to align with a carrier. It has avoided US CDMA and can forget AT&T, which leaves T-Mobile, the smallest carrier of the US big 4. Not great, but better than nothing at all. Nokia does need the US from a brand image perspective. It also needs to manage the N8 more professionally and aggressively. Having “Mr. Rodgers” type product managers selling the N8 on Youtube is ludicrous. Nuts. The inability of Nokia’s US Marketing team to create hype and mystique around its N series products shows a level of incompetence that can only be exceeded by BP oil engineers in the Gulf of Mexico. Seriously, Nokia has a great product in the N8 and the perfect opportunity to take some wind out of Apple’s sails by using a T-mobile relationship and its Penta band N8. For instance, buy the N8 unsubsidezed at a great price and here’s a coupon from T-mobile (covering T-mobiles subsidy) which you can redeem within the next 6 months contingent on a 2 year contract with T-Mobile. Now, at least 1 AT&T customer would buy the N8 with this type of deal.
