Nokia N97 vs Samsung Omnia HD vs Sony Ericsson Idou

Nokia N97 vs Samsung Omnia HD vs Sony Ericsson Idou

I was all set on the N97 until a three way ruckus broke out with the Omnia HD and Idou both diving in to join the Super-Mobile-Convergence-Device war.

Samsung and Sony Ericsson have extremely strong contenders, with:

The Omnia HD packing in a most gorgeous 3.7” AMOLED display, Symbian S60 V 5.0, 8MP camera and 720p 24fps widescreen HD video recording and

The code-named Idou, bringing in 3.5” widescreen display, as well as Symbian S60 V 5.0 and a 12MP camera with Xenon.

They all run on Symbian S60 V 5.0; even with their own specific interface ‘quirks’, they should all be pretty similar to each other. We’ll just have to see when they’re all at production level to see who makes the most to bring the best user friendly and innovative interface.

Is the 32GB of memory and physical keyboard enough to keep you from straying to the Samsung or Sony-Ericsson camp? We’ve seen most of the wow features on the N97 along while ago from the aged classic that is the N95 announced in 2006! On-board GPS, A2DP, 3G, HSDPA, WiFi, 5MP Carl Zeiss camera with LED flash, 3.5mm audio/tv out jack (most of which the mass public easily overlooked). Whilst the N95 was ahead of its time for quite a while the N97 which hasn’t even hit the shops is already flanked by two other very powerful rivals.

It seems it won’t be long until the hardware battle becomes saturated, all phones being more or less identical in shape, size and features where everything will come down to who’s providing the best software, online services and community/ecosystem interaction.

So, in this combat of flagships, do any pack enough artillery to sink the infamous iPhone? Or will that be accomplished by the elusive Palm Pré, or perhaps an Android?

Funny, I wrote about this yesterday. For me the N97 is still my favorite because of the qwerty but the OmniaHD might be ok if I get used to the onscreen keyboard. That’s pretty much the deciding factor.

I am still inclined to purchase the Nokia N97 myself.

The Idou, while very nice, is more a camera centric phone, it actually lacks many standard smart phone features, such as Wifi.

The Omina HD, with its brilliant HD video recording, but the design and ergonomics do not appeal to me…

The Nokia N97, on the other hand, I like mostly for the following reasons:
    – Symmetrical design, screen centered perfectly.
    – Homescreen, widgets, focus on social networking and live data.
    – Querty keyboard
    – 48GB memory
    – Its a Nokia, and there is specific Nokia software I want to use, such as Sports Tracker.

Nope, I’m still sold on the Nokia N97.

My choice is definitely idou. Not only does it have wifi and gps, it also have a gorgeous display and it will also be running on three individual chips. Three in one ARM. Things can’t get any better plus the NHD display makes it simply perfect. Plus it might be recording at hd. I love it!

to me I believe the omnia is way better than all because not only do you have the same os as n97 and idou, which means you have all the business people happy, then you kick it into high gear and give the entertainment a boost, with the ability to record in hd. what do you say favorite sammy guy oh yeah unnnn-beeel-lievable.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect yours, but I don’t see how the Omnia will keep the business people happy, just because of the OS…

The Omnia, while very nice, is a multimedia focused phone, hence the HD recording (very nice)

But what business people like, is being able to access their emails and data quickly, to be able to type quickly and easily…out of these 3 phones, the Nokia N97 achives that the best by being the only one to provide a full querty, a winning feature for business folk.

Then of course, it can be debated that the N97 ‘kicks it into high gear’ by being the only phone to provide a whopping 48GB storage (minimum)

But one of the biggest selling points to me is the homescreen, having live data using widgets, connected at all times…oh yeah, thats unnnn-beeel-lievable.

Note. I pointed out in my first post that the Idou does not have Wifi – correction, it does…but that does not change my decision…as another point being, the Idou is still so much in concept stage, it could be ages from actual release, while the N97 is only 2 months away.
That, and the N97 has the huge memory, homes screen with widgets, and there is great Nokia software available.

    Just my 2 cents.

You guys are missing one o the biggest points – Flash! I have been waiting Years for a phone to support FULL Flash an now, finally, Nokia have answered. Pornotube.com, youtube.com, live sports streaming (In Flash – Justin.tv etc) – ALL possible on the go now! No more fiddling with third party apps!

This is a big deal for me.

Plus Nokia Maps beats their nav systems hands down!

What these 3 phones have compared to iPhone?
Removable battery which lasts more than half day.
    Uncensored apps
Oh yea, and you can actually use them as phones
    *NOT made by apple*

I also forgot, how about a camera, video, etc…

N97 Camera is the worst camera in a handset i have ever seen, every shot it takes has a yellowish tint in it, i think it happens because of the dual flash located very near to the lens. The yellowish tint in the shots usually comes at the border that ultimately spoils the whole shot.
    N97 ‘s camera is just pathetic.. :O
